From an old BLOG entry of mine:

Kyoto Discord

Fend not for the earth

Until the politicians

Are thus endangered ?

:Bobby Nichols

2-17-2005

"Kyoto Discord " a Haiku: ... We were made caretakers of this wonderful earth, and we will be held accountable to a Higher Authority.

thanks for your back bobby

in really concerned about the planet now

the big industrial countrys dont give a dam

about climate change as long as they can exploit the planet

for the sake of profits

here in nz

we notice it more as we are a small population

but our big biz is the worst offender

one of our timber companys

fletcher holdings

bought up all the forestry

cut it down

and didnt replant the trees as was in the agreement

i remember we demonstrated about them not puting the resources

back into forestery so

they moved off shore to canada

and are now in dispute with the invirementilist

so it goes on

ime only speaking from the problems in my country

ime sure other countrys have bigger problems than us

that is why i sent that post in

My favorite quote from "The Matrix"... I'm sure we all remember the context:

" I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here.

It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that

you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet

instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding

environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area, and

you multiply, and multiply, until every natural resource is consumed.

The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is

another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern.

A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet, you

are a plague, and we are the cure. "

Here in the States we hear something to do with the environment every day:

One day its the Alaskan permafrost retreating... the next day the great hole

in the ozone layer is becoming greater... the fishing industry is due to drive

ocean fish extinct from over-fishing... the spotted owl population is being

depleted in old growth forest / species (flora and fauna) are being driven to

extinction in developing countries / frog species disappearing mysteriously...

developing countries pillaging forests for farming and resources... pollution

rampant in developed and developing countries, even as they vie for oil and

coal resources that dwindle faster and faster as prices go higher and higher -

making the cost of polluting ever more costly... desert lands increasing in

under-developed countries leading to massive starvation / disease / genocide

/ and war... glaciers receding at an ever rapid pace / some disappearing till the

next ice age?... Arctic / Antartic glaciers the size of many city blocks breaking

off - going out to sea further north / south than before...

and on it goes.

There's hope. As a man of faith I know that those who worship the almighty

dollar over The Almighty and His great works will have their day of reckoning.

I just pray it is sooner than later.

i just read in a news flash

choppers are taking tourist to the bergs at $500 a pop

and have landed a couple on the bergs at a cost of $350

extra

yes bubba bob exploitation has started

some one only has to fall in the water

and the rescue costs

fall on the tax payer

the marine depart has issued a waring

not to land on the bergs as they may roll over

they can be seen quite plainly from the shore now

by the naked eye

im on my way there tomorrow

they have an observation post

on the shore line at the city of dunedin

where you can see them through the glasses

as the photos come on stream ile see if i can send them to the board

It'd have to be a pretty tiny iceberg for there to be any danger of one rolling with just the weight of a chopper and a few tourists. I'm not sayin' it's smart to land on one, or that there aren't other dangers, but rolling? No.

Start a web page! NZICE.COM! Sell t-shirts! You have to strike while the iron's hot man! So to speak.

Here are some links I found today to articles with pictures of the ice bergs.

Seattle PI newspaper NZ icebergs

USA Today newspaper article on NZ ice bergs

Perhaps the danger of landing on an iceberg is whether it is solid in that spot (and deeply solid) enough to hold helicopter. Who knows the depth of the berg under a flat space, or if it is like a shelf jutting out from main part. They would also have to be careful to find a flat enough space to land far enough away from any uplifted sections. And another consideration might also be the vibration from the helicopter possibly making the berg fracture if it isn't completely solid? Remember these ice bergs are broken off bigger ones and have been traveling in somewhat warmer currents towards NZ at what is the beginning of their summer I think, so probably sunnier and warmer than where the icebergs started out. So yes I can understand it could be dangerous. But what a story to tell afterwards, and of course taking pictures. Tempting!!!

Pat

God bless everyone
