It is true that most current American families originated from other countries (mostly Europe/Africa). Native Americans were the first settlers in America, hence the name.To be fair though, America has never been one to turn away immigrants, the government would just like them to follow the rules set forth. JDoors
Re: panhandleRe: immigration It's been repeated for every wave of immigrants: The ones who are already here and are or are getting assimilated look down at newer arrivals, who are blamed for everything that's wrong, or whose habits or requirements are deemed inappropriate (kind of "We have ours, now YOU go away!). Right now there's a lot of resentment toward Mexicans, in many other countries it's Muslims.

JDoors
No reason to apologize for not knowing every bit of local language, slang or colloquialisms. At work a housekeeper (who was from an African nation) was vacuuming. He said, as I passed by, "minedacord." Minedacord? What is a minedacord? "Pardon?" "Minedacord." "I'm sorry, what?" "Minedacord." Ooohhhhh! Mind. The. Cord. Be careful of the cord. Look out for the cord. Please step over the cord. Few people I encounter would use the word "mind" for this (other than the phrase "mind your manners," which probably comes from G.B. anyway). And I won't even mention when a Brit asks for a cigarette ...
martymas
yes JDsome times the language barriers exist that we dont come up against untl we hear other cultures example an american friend from boston was here on holiday and he wanted go and see what a pub [inn.hotel.bar.]looked like and to get to grips with the local lingo [slang]he and i went a local pub while we were talking he said i just heard some thing strange when i asked what it was he said some one next to me shouted [bought a beer for a mate]put the glass to his lips and said heres to youi said but there nothing wrong with thatthat is our custom he saidbut he drunk it himself i didnt try to explain the interptationof the local slang i left it at that marty
JDoors
I've seen (in movies and the like) someone buying a drink "for" a "lost" buddy (eg. someone who's died), but you can buy drinks for a buddy who's right there, AND drink it yourself?!? Oh boy, I'm surprised that custom hasn't caught on here.
bozodog
And I won't even mention when a Brit asks for a cigarette ...Ooohhhh boy. I told my dear husband never to lose his "britness" until he asked for a cigarette... I told him if he wasn't 6'4" he might get hurt using that word.
