  1. If I install xp on another computer can I use the same cd key thats on my computer.

Sort answer, NO... this is illegal and pirating. No ok to do.

    Agreed Tony :)

As Tony said, what you want to do is illegal, and pirating, and as far as I know, it is IMPOSSIBLE to use the key from a Win XP CD more than once per install - The Key is specific to the CD, and will need to be activated - When the activation fails, you would have to call MS and have it activated.

Additionally, when MS does Validation to see if you are running a "legit copy of Windows" using that Validation Tool, it would find a problem, and say that your copy is not legitimate - XP Keys may be used to reinstall an OS if it fails, but using the same key on multiple machines is impossible as far as I know - and I have the FULL VERSION of XP Home Edition, and it wouldn't work with mine.

As far as OEM Versions, It normally only needs activation and I don't think a key from an OEM disk can be used with another CD - wouldn't make sense - So NOPE - No Go!

ONE CD, ONE KEY = 1 Single Install Per Machine, Per the EULA

I bought an XP HME SP1 cd 2 years ago or so and have since installed XP HME on 5 machines. No problems with activating or validation on either computers. I once heard that Microsoft does allow installation on up to ?5? computers.

  2. Have either of you contacted your ISP to see if there is a problem at their end? Are your firewalls configured correctly? Have you tried unplugging the power to your routers and or modems to recycle them?

Yes, comcast came out a couple weeks ago and said everything was fine, i disable my firewall and same problem, yes i have restarted both router and modem....any other ideas?

Maybe try connecting to the net w/o the router. I once had that problem and took the router out and my connection was fine. Couble be the router.

  3. Is it normal for Ubuntu to take a minute and half to two minutes to boot up? I have a 13GB HDD with Ubuntu/Kubuntu on it in a PIII 500Mhz system. It didn't take so long before I installed Kubuntu on the HDD. Is there any way to cut down on boot time?

  4. Sounds like you've gotten lucky with the swaps...given that X is configured for video card it is running on, I assume the machines had similar graphics at least made by the same company.

    you could try:

    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

    to reconfigure X

Thanks tictoc. It worked. I had to mess around with the settings to figure it all out. This 9 year Windows veteran is finally learning Linux.

  5. I have a 20GB HDD that I installed Ubuntu on and want to move the HDD to another computer. When I moved it, it doesnt boot up and tells me the X-Server(graphical interface)couldn't be started. Now, I've tried it on other computers and it boots up fine. Why is this?

  6. Hello, I have been told by two people to remove my danasoft.com signature. This is the one with the IP info and OS info. To all those who have complained about it. Please read. This is straight from the danasoft.com site.

"The signature image is generated in real-time for each user that views it. Your IP address and other information are only visible to YOU, not to others, but because people see their own IP address and computer information displayed in the graphic, they think that their information can be seen by everyone!"

  7. I have a IWill KK266 mobo and using 98SE. When I got to the Devices window, it shows that the Primary and Sencondary IDE Controllers are not installed properly. I tried going to IWill's website and tried installing some stuff from driverguide.com but it didn't work. I don't understand IDE controllers. Also, under 98SE, it doesn't see my cd burner and cd-rom drives. Could the IDE controllers cause this?
