  1. Control Panel > Sounds and audio devices> hardware -- when I click on the sound card from the list, it won't give me the option to APPLY , if that matters.
  2. I had my son disable the Realtek onboard (I won't touch the bios ) I followed the instructions for installing my Retail Plus Sound card (by C-Media) It installed and said the device is working properly but it still doesn't show in Control Panel> Sounds and Audio Devices -- It shows in Control Panel > System > Device Manager as working with no errors I tried updating the driver thru the "update driver" option, it updated and I rebooted. It's still not showing....when choosing properties in the device manager, it's showing as working. CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device
  3. THanks Pete, I'll try that, I already have a cheap sound card so I will go that avenue. I owe you big time! I'll let you know what works
  4. I downloaded the drivers that sethook posted and installed them... Still says no audio device, no problems and no conflicts This device is working properly. If you are having problems with this device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter. What's next? Sledge hammer? lol
  5. 8. Pete, I've done everything you've suggested. Still no audio device, but not showing any errors. So I updated the driver and rebooted in C-Media AC97 audio device properties it's showing "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" ? Thank you so much for your valuable time
  9. Thanks Pete, Do I leave these other things on my computer, or do I remove them: Audio codecs Legacy audio drivers legacy video capture devices media control devices video codecs
  10. sorry about the double post, the first one froze up on me, feel free to remove one
  11. Add and remove programs : uninstalled the PCI card I bought and installed Device manager: (this is what was listed) Audio codecs Legacy audio drivers legacy video capture devices media control devices microsft kernel acoustic echo canceller video codecs there was only one issue, the kernel acoustic had ! -- I uninstalled that. The others didn't have an uninstall option, only the remove option but indicated it would affect the system and I wasn't sure where to remove any of those I took out my card rebooted It's not searching for anything now, but also indicates no audio device in control pane
  12. Add and remove programs: uninstalled the new pci card I installed Device manager: (this is what was listed) Audio codecs Legacy audio drivers legacy video capture devices Media control devices MIcrosoft kernel acoustic echo canceller video codecs The only thing that had ! was the microsoft kernel so I uninstalled that. The others only gave me option to remove, but indicated they are needed for the system, are there any others I should be removing? I took out the plug and play card I installed, plugged my sound plug back into my onboard sound card spot rebooted Now it's not searching for anyth
  13. Hi Pete, This is just so frustrating. I *did* try to roll back the driver as soon as it happened, and it said it couldn't find it, it was very strange, I've never had this problem before, that's why I'm so frustrated....I'll follow your step by step and I'll be back. Thank you
  14. I give up, nothing seems to work. Thanks for everyones help
  15. the on board one worked until it stopped working after an update, whether it's still good, I have no idea, how would I check that? The other I tried putting in, I purchased brand new at Staples. I'm not sure where on the motherboard I should be looking, but I do see a chip that has the little blue sound(something) crab thing on it...that's really technical huh? lol...looks like it has ALC665 and then under that 42318T1 4100
