  1. I have used MusicMatch Jukebox for many years now. I don't buy a lot of music anymore but I subscribe to their on-demand service it is like having the worlds largest music collection at my finger tips. when I find a song I want to take with me I buy it then. Most of the time I just Que up a bunch and listen at home. This is not for everyone I get special pricing (reward of long history with them) I only pay $17.95 per quarter I think it is $7.95 per month otherwise. But buying music from them is easy and the format is not proprietary.

Like Rhema7 I use MusicMatch Jukebox. But unlike Rhema, I do not subscribe to their On-Demand service. I can still download songs for 99 cents. I do not pay any periodic fees.

  2. Okay, I've done the basics - changed the router password (not admin anymore :)) and set up WEP with a 128 bit password.

What else would be helpful to do to protect myself from intruders, such as blocking ports fro telenet and netbios (things I've read about online but am unsure whether are useful to do or not)

I think that if your password uses the 24 or 26 character maximum you will have excellent protection.

  6. Im once gain trying to rip some old records using "line in". When I plug my stereo in to the line in port on my sound card, I here the music playing oer my PC's speakers, however I can't seem to record it! Ive tried Audio Grabber and Music Match. It jsut records nothing.

There should not be a problem using Musicmatch. Be sure that under the tab Options/Recorder/Source there is a check next to Line-In.

  7. I have Windows XP Home. I have Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spyware Blaster, and Spybot Search and Destroy. These are in addition to McAfee Personal Firewall Plus and McAfee Virus Scan. Is this overkill? I don't want competing programs doing the same thing if this is going to create problems, slowdowns, or risk crashes. Does anyone have suggestions for the best of these programs and which would be best to uninstall? Would it be preferable to uninstall the Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster, and Spybot Search and Destroy and in their place subscribe to McAfee's Privacy Service and Spam Killer? Since the latter 2 are both McAfee programs would I not eliminate the possibility of conflicts and overlaps? In other words would I be better off with all McAfee programs?

I should add that I use Firefox.

  8. I found that my system slowed down after following a few of BV's suggested eliminations. I think that one can accomplish far more toward increasing system efficiency by choosing "Adjust Windows for best performance" rather that the default "Let Windows decide what's best for my computer" in System/Advanced/Performance". Does anyone know of any disadvantage in making this adjustment?

  9. My friend just got this brand new dell, and hes not really into gaming or computers, but hes really into his music. the first day he got it, i was over there setting it up for him. of course that wasnt hard, all he had was a mouse and keyboard and monitor at the time. which was actually only about 2 weeks ago. anyhow, as soon as he got logged on, he opened wmp. its all funky and it doesnt work at all, hes at his playlist, which only has some dell sample songs and stuff on it, but it just wouldnt functiion right, it failed and closed. he had no spyware or anything on his computer of course. does anyone know what may be the problem? he has windows xp home sp. 2 and wmp 10

I would first check File Associations to be sure that the appropriate file suffixes for his music filenames are checked for Windows Media. Go to My Computer/Tools/Folder Options.

  10. Thank all of you who responded. You have been most helpful. It looks as though the TV-out is the most dispensable part of the setup since DVDs can be created for playback and I already have 2 DVD players, one a standard stand-alone and the other in a computer. I see little advantage in playing videos stored on the hard drive on a TV screen. Everything looks, as you say, quite doable, at least from the desktop which will be wirelessly networked with the laptop.

  11. Thank you. Am I correct in thinking that the new laptop will not accommodate all those cards: video capture card, sound card with line-out, and video card with TV-out.

My desktop Dell is supposed to have NVidia GE Force 4 Ti 4200 with TV out but I was told to install a newer, updated driver and the system no longer mentions TV out as it did before I updated the driver. Is the PVR-150 a video capture card? I do expect to network the desktop and laptop.

The whole thing sounds quite complicated and problem prone, but I could be wrong about this.

  12. Thank you. I'll check it out further. I wonder whether that setup requires Windows Media Center. I expect to have Windows XP on both computers.

Well, having me explain you won't do you any good--i'm trying the same thing at my house.

However, some time ago a show called "Systm" released an episode on "MythTV". MythTV is a program (that runs on linux) that is basically a free version of Tivo. Although it only runs on Linux, there are many forums of linux that ONLY run the program--they were made specifically for running MythTV. In this episode of systm, they'll show you through the whole process, and hopefully you can apply it at your house...

Or, you can try doing it yourself with hardware and software from AverMedia. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16815116616.

Whichever route you take, good luck!

  13. Hello all: I'm new here. Have Dell Dimension 8200 desktop, 2.26 GHz which makes DVD+RW discs. Have Windows XP Home and superfast DSL, nominal downloads @ 2.9 Mbps. Am contemplating buying a laptop and creating a Linksys network. Would appreciate any advice on hookups with cable TV/stereo system, probably with portable keyboard with a view toward management of TV and stereo from the laptop as well as recording TV programs. I know I can buy a DVD recorder and do pretty much the same things but why have 3 DVD recorders? Would gratefully receive suggestions from those with similar setups.
