My computer is an HP Pavilion Slimline s7700n PC and I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. Vista came pre installed so everything is legit.

Well I turn my computer on, and it goes to the screen with the little green progress bar. It takes about 25-30 moves across the screen before it goes to the logo screen, then after it does that i can count about 13 seconds before everything freezes. It does it no matter what. If I move the mouse around, it will freeze. If I try to log in, it will freeze. Don't know what to do. I can log into safe mode but that's about it. I'm using a System Rescue CD right now to get on firefox and type this. My computer hasn't worked in about 1.5 months since trying to install SP1. Need anymore details? thank

i didnt it manually, i set all my updates to automatic for the things i could. i guess i should have done some more research...

my cd drive is the 3rd one listed, my second one is a recovery partition that didnt complete. when i double click the cd drive icon it doesnt let me do anything. it says it cannot read the disc in the drive. ive tried a few discs and none work.

im not sure how to exactly access the drive in safe mode. i put my usb drive in, nothing happens. i put the cd in, it spins a lot but doesnt show up in the cd drive. so... donno what to do.

hmm i did some bootrec commands and can now get into safemode. before i try anything with pending.xml how do i copy my pictures to a cd or flash drive. when i insert them in they arent showing in my computer. any ideas? i might just take ownership of the file and rename to pending.old.xml. i would just like to get my pics on a disk first.

well today i went and bought myself an 8gb flash drive on sale and i was wondering... i found out that i can go to cmd prompt in win re and open notepad and locate where the pictures are at but when i try to open them they are just letters and numbers. if i drag and drop them to where my flash drive is in my computer, would i be able to open and save on another computer? thanks for your help, sean

yeah ive seen that page. ive seen most of those pages but they never say if the file has a lot of numbers and letters behind it. i also have a cleanup.xml file but no numbers and letters behind it.

the exact name of the file is pending.xml.01c8f7t07237e5ea and it is 24.6 mb, if that is any help...

yes it is the same computer. im running windows vista home prem. what other info would you like to know? i have tried to do chkdsk c: f and r and sfc /scannow and nothing seems to work. it says the orphaned file it fixes is beep.sys but it doesnt seem to work. im on my phones internet so i cant really do much research what other info do you need?

well my new problem is now my computer takes a long time to boot up, and it gets to a screen that says "installing service pack: 3 of 3 0%" and its frozen on that screen. sometimes it shuts down by itself. i tried to do some research and found out that i need to delete a pending.xml file. i can open up command prompt and then notepad and see where the file is and i see a pending.xml with a bunch of numbers and letters behind it. is that the one im supposed to delete? thanks, sean.

well not really. my sister really wants to save her pics of her baby. i heard there is a way to get them on to an external hd with a live linux cd, i assume like system rescue cd, but im not sure on how to do that. the startup repair doesnt do squat, says it fixes something but ends up going to a black error screen... not sure what to do...
-
well my computer got messed up from a sp1 update and now it doesnt boot. i used a system rescue cd and i got rid of the bsod but now i got another problem. my startup repair doesnt detect anything wrong but it still doesnt start up. so i tried to go to a pre sp1 restore point and it goes well until "finalizing file restore..." and it just hangs there. it has not made progress in the last 20 hours. anyone know whats goin on? thanks.

I got to the part where it is "attempting repairs" on the windows start up repair screen but it has not made any progress in about.. 16 hours so far, a blue bar slides across in the little window but no progress so far... It says I can't cancel the opperation, but doesn't give me a reason why. I can't X out of it or click cancel. Any ideas on why this has happened? Would it be bad if I held the powerbutton down and shut the computer off? Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Yes I've seen that page about the linux cd but I do have a question before starting it. When it says I need a vista dvd, my computer didn't come with one. It came with a "windows vista anytime upgrade" cd. Is that the same thing? When I try to boot from that cd I get the same bsod so i'm thinking of trying to do that workaround.

last week i was prompted to install SP1 so i did and it needed to be restarted so i did. i let the installer run all night and when i woke up it was on a screen that had !! 0xc0190036 !!. i left it on for 3 more hours and nothing changed. i pressed the power button and it turned off. i turned it back on and it went to a black screen that says windows failed to start and i have 2 options: launch startup repair and the other is startup normally. both lead to a bsod with the code 0x0000c1f5. i cant go into safemode or anything... i need my computer for school... any ideas?
