After re-enabling all the items in the msconfig startup section, it started saying "task manager has been disabled by your administrator". Kept having to go into the registry to fix it. Ive also just installed bitdefender 2008 total security which helped with the taskman. It now hangs on the shutdown screen for some reason. (just says 'Windows is shutting down') but then im forced to hold the off button down...

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file) <--------- why?? ******
That line was part of Live Messenger. Did you uninstall it? If you did, then the file is no longer present on your PC, but the registry entry remains. This isn't malicious - it's just leftovers.
I could offer more assistance for the filenames that look odd, but you'd have to re-enable them in msconfig so that I can see them - they don't show up in your hijackthis log if they're disabled from startup.
What kind of popups are you getting?

Hey there, sorry ive taken so long to reply. Been on holidays and didnt have to worry about computers. My brother has been using it and said it froze a few times when using 2 or 3 programs at once but no pop-ups. it used to run so quickly! .. think i might have to clean some things up and partition the drive.

I've noticed i can no longer get into the task manager - it says "The task manager has been disabled by your administrator." I am the admin though..

Also, in the services list theres two suspect looking things. One has absolutely no description, nothing. its just a blank space. The other one has just a square character (like the kind you see on web pages that are in a different language)

I dont think they showed up in the log or not but im not experienced enough to know.

My computer runs fairly well, but i think it could do better, as in, I occasionally i get pop ups and also theres some things in my startup, in msconfig that have no command name or weird file names, but ive disabled those. Have a look and see if this is normal
