I fixed it, heh. i just downloaded ffdshow. it's a data codec. i tried XviD before, but it didn't help at all. ffdshow acts as a codec for every type, so it performs the functions of all codecs. good program.

first off, i didn't back them up, and i didn't mess with them. i doubt the files themselves are the problems. it's something within the files required to PLAY them that is the problem. files i didn't even touch have acted wierd, and it's gone to other things. so, backing up seems unneccissary. second, i didn't REALIZE i'd be messinge with them! they were just simple file converters! i have no idea that his would happen! Also, sometimes my folders fail as well. I'm starting to think it's more than just something simple, although i don't think it's a virus. it appears that the folders will fail on occasion when they contain avi files.

I have a lot of avi files, and so i wanted to convert them to VOB files and the like so i could put them on video-dvds. i downloaded avi-pro and avsvideotools and after trying to use them, i found that none of my avi files worked anymore! i uninstalled and deleted them, and tries a few things, but my avis still won't work. and it's not local to windows media. they won't play on any of my media players. i'm thinking that a dll or some essential file required to play that file type was corrupted or changed in some way. i'm not sure, so i don't know if reinstalling windows media would do anything
