RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of Sndvol32.exe from the Windows XP compact disc to the system_root\System32 folder on your computer's hard disk. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent it from starting automatically.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
4. Type the following lines at the command prompt, pressing ENTER after each line, where CD-ROM drive is the drive letter of the computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD-ROM, and system_root is the path and folder name where the Windows system files are located (generally C:\Windows):
find your cd drive letter which will be d:or e: press enter
type
cd 1386
press enter
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------copy and paste this line at the prompt--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
expand sndvol32.ex_ system_root\system32\sndvol32.exe----
press enter---------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note that there is a space between "ex_" and "system_root" in this command.
For example, if your computer's CD-ROM drive is drive E, and the folder that contains the Windows system files is C:\Windows, type the following lines at the command prompt (pressing ENTER after each line):
e:
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe
5. Type exit to quit the command prompt.
6. Verify that you can start Volume Control and that the Volume icon is displayed in the notification area (if you selected this option).

in relation to the solution - if i do uninstall the sound device, and it doesn't work, could i just system restore to get back to where we were. also, which one do i uninstall - there are quite a few devices under sound and audio.
you could just uninstall them all. upon next reboot they should reinstall automatically. If something goes wrong and system restore is working properly, it should roll things back to the way they were. Just before doing it, I would make a new restore point.
I uninstalled the Audio Device and it reinstalled itself automatically. However, the problem is still present.

Incompetence. Did they tell you why they did not try and fix the issue you needed fixed, just curiousI tried taking it to a computer service place, and even though I gave them specific things to fix, they just search it for viruses (of course coming up with nothing) and didn't fix any of my problems. As Mark stated, you probably just need to let windows reinstall the drivers. If windows is unable to reinstall them after you deleted them, you may have to install them from scratch. What model computer do you have, i am having trouble finding the driver based on your belarc output?
lol. nope they never gave a reason why they didn't fix the problems. I've been back there a couple of times and they've just apologised, etc. I'm just sick of having to keep going back and forths, and no improvements being made. But, i still have to go back once more because when i got home i notice my restart button missing - so, i'm gonna go give them shit about that.

Hi guys,
Here's the msg everytime I try to play a sound file:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."
Also, when I go to Sound and Audio Device Properties (i.e.control panel --> sound & audio -->volume) it says "no sound device".
I tried taking it to a computer service place, and even though I gave them specific things to fix, they just search it for viruses (of course coming up with nothing) and didn't fix any of my problems. Subsequently, I've tried researching the problem myself but to avail - I was gonna try and download updates for my sound card, or something, but don't know where to go. As such, I've included a Belarc Report (below), hopefully giving you all the information you need.

Thanks - appreciate any input
-
i've tried that already - here r some of the things i can remember trying:
- registry fixes off internet (i.e. Kelly's Korner etc)
- resizing the icons
- deleting the icon cache
- making the icon cache bigger
- changing the resolution of my screen
- refreshing the desktop (even though this problem goes beyond just the desktop)
that's about all i can remember for now. Any other suggestions?
-
-
Most of my icons have turned to the generic icon (i.e. white with a blue strip at the top). This has happened everywhere - on the desktop, in the start menu and even when i right-click a file an select 'Open With'. I've tried every fix i could find on the internet and nothing has worked. Any suggestions?

i think this happened after reinstalling windows:
anyway, now there is double of all the folders(in documents and settings), i managed to delete a couple but the main one i want to get rid of, i can't access (it brings up the file path and says not accessible; access is denied). what do i do because its taking up half of my disk space?
thanks

When i'm logged on an try shutting down my computer it starts up again (a.k.a. restarts, lol) . But when it comes back to the 'welcome screen' and i try to shut it down, it does shut down and stays off. Any ideas?
Thankyou
