Mbsmon32, Mbsreg32

Recommended Posts

These two files have occupied a space in my System32 folder and will not delete. I am almost certain they are the cause of the MicroBillingSystems pop up which keeps appearing when I am using my computer.

There have been posts about this already on the forum however they instruct you to delete the two files and assume that you are able to.

Can anyone help?

First thing you're going to need to do is unhide hidden files and folders - follow the link below to see how to do so:

http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html#5

Next Please go here to upload a suspicious file for analysis.

  • Enter your username from this forum
  • Copy and paste the link to this thread
  • Browse for this filename: C:\WINDOWS\system32\mbsmon32.exe
  • In the comments, please mention that I asked you to upload this file
  • Click on Send File

Once you've sent that file mbsmon32.exe please do the following:

In HijackThis tick the following entry and have it fix it:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mbsmon32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mbsmon32.exe

Then go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\ and find mbsmon32.exe - and delete that file.

After you've deleted the file, reboot the computer and post a brand new HijackThis Logfile.

What happens when you try to delete it?

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.

[*]Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mbsmon32.exe

    c:\windows\system32\mbsreg32.exe

[*] Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.

[*]Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

After reboot - post a new HJT Log.

Your log is mostly clean, please have HJT fix the following, reboot and post a new log. Also, let me know how the machine is running after that.

Did you not get my post about re-naming both files twice, without the extention, or is that too easy for you guy's ??

Hi makepeace,

We were able to delete those files with KillBox if you look at the HJT they are no longer there after we ran it. Also, in order to help with HJT logs on this forum you need to be on the HJT Team. We appreciate your help though. Feel free to post to other sections of the forums and help out. The malware forum is the only one off limits to regular members, unless you need help. Please don't take this the wrong way, it's just how we operate around here.

I had precisely the same problem. I started in safe mode and ran msconfig. You should be able to find mbsmon32. just uncheck the box then restart normally. You should not get the bill recurring. You should also be able to delete mbsmon32 and mbsreg from your system.

By the way, its seems that this company is making a habit of doing this. I have compalined to Consumer Direct (email www.consumerdirect.gov.uk); if everyone who has been affected by this does similar, it may prevent it happening again.
