hi all

i need some ones advice

a friend emailed a video for me to watch

a video by some one called Jeffrey Kaplan

im not familiar with the name

but some of you may have seen or heard of him

well i opened it

and it said you need to install quicktime to view it

as ive had trouble with QT previously

i clicked no

and lo and behold

ive just started my compt and here is the QT icon in my tray

i searched and found 2 QT files

and one of them was program files

this bloody thing is still like a virus

it hasent changed since i started compting

can i stop it from being installed

by putting it in the restricted zone

or do i have to live with it

there are a lot of vides that are played through QT

its not auto installed, so it had to be installed or preinstalled.

You can use something like

VLC Media Player to play QT files.

link is a trusty person

and may have thought i had QT installed

ive had trouble with it in the past

so ive become wary of it

QT is being told to start with your comp

Run msconfig and see if there is an entry there for it and

just remove the entry. Then it won't start with bootup

I agree, Quicktime has several virus-like habits. There's a "starter" file that runs when you boot your computer and it gets reinstalled every time you run QT. I don't WANT that starter file booting up, but I can't stop QT from installing it any time I view QT content. For a while I would remove it from my startup files but I finally just gave up and leave it there now.

It probably automatically STARTED the installation in the background before you had the opportunity to approve or deny the install, hence you have several files already installed. It's time to hunt & destroy (it's possible, though I doubt it if this was indeed a "fly-by" install, that there's an uninstall program available in Control Panel, Add/Remove programs).

Apple is arrogant, IMO.

I hate QT. It's like a bad relative. They never leave.

Go over to Edskes site and download one of the QT Alternatives.

While you are there also get one of the Real alternatives. Then you can dump that other REAL pain in the A$$ .

They both work great. That's all I use.

ive had problems with it in the past

and i sort of became anti QT

rightly or wrongly

i still hate it

for years ive refered to it as a virus

it is one of the reasons i became anti apple

VLC plays Quicktime files....sometimes =P

But i dont have anything wrong with Quicktime, its RealPlayer you have to watch out for.

yes i agree with that real player is in the same ditch as QT

winamp suits me fine (music organization is way better than WMP). I use QT for a lot of online content that use it but sometimes I wish it wasn't there.

Forgot another annoying QT habit: The nag screen. What is this, shareware or something? No, they just want you to buy the Pro version. Well I don't WANT the Pro version, why do I have to answer that friggin' question every time I open QT? (Thank GOD they haven't figure out how to nag us if you click on QT content to open QT by association or via embedded web content.)

That said, the quality of the video is pretty good (though I hate that many online sources require you to wait for the entire file to download before it plays).
