"caused An Illegal Op"

Recommended Posts

I just got a call to go "fix" a machine.

Win? possible 98/ME

When IE is opened or when typing address in address bar: ...Caused an Illegal Operation.... machine shuts down.

Possible uninstall/reinstall IE.

Will update machine. Install Spybot, Adaware, A squared.

Any suggestions to the illegal operation problem.

Also have another question here.

Will go this afternoon to check the machine.

*welcomes Pro1driver and gives him a big hug*

I had an issues with that before on another computer. It ended up being that IE just needed an update, so it is a possibility, but I'd still definately check for the spyware/virus things as well. Another thing, if those dont fix it, check in about updating drivers for things.....

i did some quick checking. some sites say to run anti virus and spyware programs. however, some also say that a JAVA problem exsists. try to update the JAVA virtual machine. go to java and get the latest JAVA download.

:) Welcome to this forum, pro1driver. :D

oh, i've been here many times before, mostly just reading the questions/answers.

i knew many of you from the tech tv boards were here, but i still enjoy the tech tv boards (for now), and will make a conscience effort to come here more often.

a big hug back to you Nerelda, and my wife is out for the night, so i know i can get away with "being" with another woman!!

just another dirty old man here....huh??

Update

Wiped Hdd twice with killdisk. Used a bootdisk from bootdisk.com for fdisk/format. Installed W98 upgraded to 98SE (didn't have a full SE cd).Installed adaware and spybot from cd with update from 11-17-04. Both found spyware, machine never connected to a phone line, or anything else. Alexa data miner come from IE. Next time you reformat scan and check it out before you connect to the internet. Used JV16 to tidy the registry, nearly 200 entries marked for safe removal. Will bring machine back to owner with a HowTo.txt for maintaince.

Going take a nap now.
