Father's Hijackthis Log

Recommended Posts

Whenever he opens IE, it loads Google then almost instantly it changes to C:\WINDOWS\system32\notice.htm which says "Attention ! An Unwanted Internet URL with the keyword nazi was requested. Browser reset by system." After this appears, browsing can still be done. When in Firefox, the same page opens up in a new tab seemingly randomly. It happens every second that Yahoo is viewed. When Yahoo is viewed in IE, it pops up the tab in Firefox somehow as well. I've run Ad Aware and Spybot, both updated. Here is the log file:

Hey Snaxe! :D

Sorry for the delay in response there...If this thread is not resolved before this coming Sunday I will have someone else help you. (I am leaving for vacation :) )

Please run HijackThis, do a scan, and place a check next to the following items to be fixed:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinSvr] C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinSvr.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WPMon] C:\WINDOWS\System32\wpmon.exe

I strongly recommend you remove the following, they are potential malware but are considered optional:

O4 - Startup: PowerReg SchedulerV2.exe

You have PowerReg Scheduler in your log. This is a registration reminder that is used by a number of different companies. It is not needed and some people think that it reports back to the company about your computer, so I suggest fixing it...

Close all browsers and windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

You may need to configure your computer to show hidden files. See HERE for how to show hidden files.

Now reboot into Safe mode by tapping the F8 key while your computer starts up and selecting "Safe Mode" from the menu that appears. (You will not be able to access the internet while in Safe mode).

Delete the files in bold:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\SysCtl.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinSvr.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wpmon.exe

Reboot normally to get back to normal mode.

Can you assure me that the following files are related to legitimate applications?:

C:\Program Files\Parental Controls\PCTHelp.exe

C:\DRS\Sys\UnivMgr.exe

Please download SilentRunners here by right clicking on the link and selecting Save As. Please save the .vbs file on your desktop and run it. When it finishes, it will open a screen saying it is done. After a message pops up to tell you its done, please open the new txt file that should be on your desktop and copy all its contents into a reply to this post. Do not open the file until it tells you its done!

Post a new HijackThis log along with the log from SilentRunners.

Hey Canoeingkidd!

Sorry for the delay in response there...If this thread is not resolved before this coming Sunday I will have someone else help you. (I am leaving for vacation smile.gif )

That's alright Ck, I'm a patient little bugger. :) Have fun on vacation!

C:\Program Files\Parental Controls\PCTHelp.exe

C:\DRS\Sys\UnivMgr.exe

Both are legitimate. The first one came with our Linksys WRT54GS router and the second my father uses for his work to look at CAT scans (he's a neurologist). I personally wouldn't want the first one my system, but he would.

Here is the new HJT log:

Hmm....I haven't looked through the logs yet...looks like it came back though.

Can you find itime.dll on your system? Its probably in C:\WINDOWS\System32\ but if it isn't you may have to Search for it. Do you have any idea what it is and is it legitimate? You can right-click it and look at the "Properties."

EDIT: Be sure not to remove it! You may lose your internet connection.

If you do find it but don't know what it is...please zip it and send it here.

After you have taken care of the above...do this.

Please run HijackThis, do a scan, and place a check next to the following items to be fixed:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinSvr] C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinSvr.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WPMon] C:\WINDOWS\System32\wpmon.exe

O16 - DPF: {88D758A3-D33B-45FD-91E3-67749B4057FA} (Sinstaller Class) - http://dm.screensavers.com/dm/installers/si/1/sinstaller.cab

Close all browsers and windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Reboot and post a new HijackThis log in a reply to this topic.

I got your email...but as far as I can tell no file was attached :P

Autodad did decide to remove it here however - http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?sh...05entry231505

Also, I just noticed WinSvr.exe was in that log also. I'm assuming, then, that itime.dll is related to it and its something you don't want. Could you still try resending it though one more time? I'm going to go ahead with fixing instructions.

Edit: I've found another log with both too...

Please Download LSPFix from http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm and Run the Program. Disconnect from the Internet and close all Internet Explorer Windows. Check the "I know what I'm doing" Button and remove all traces of itime.dll. Click "Finish."

Reboot your computer and post a new HijackThis log. How is the computer running now?

Sorry, looks like no one saw my post about being on vacation in the hidden helper's forum. :(

Your lastest log looks clean and if you aren't having any problems then this is resolved (I just hope you haven't gotton re-infected while I was away :o ).

You need to prevent re-infection. I strongly recommend you take the following steps because infections are likely to reoccur unless you are protected (I post the same speech for everyone so you may have already taken some of these steps):

  • Disable then re-enable System Restore. This will delete your old restore points. Malware could get backed up in System Restore. To do so in Windows XP see this tutorial. To do so in Windows ME see this tutorial. (If you are using a different Operating System skip this step).
  • Keep up-to-date with the latest security patches from Microsoft. This step is VERY important. Please visit http://www.windowsupdate.com in Internet Explorer and if it asks to install software, let it. Start the scan for updates needed for your computer. Install all critical updates. When it prompts you to reboot, do so. Then repeat this process again until there are no more critical updates listed.
You can also access the Windows Update site at any time by going to "Tools" > "Windows Update" in Internet Explorer. Please check for updates frequently.
  • Install Antivirus software. It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. Two popular programs are AVG and Avast. Both have free versions for home users. Do not have more than one active antivirus at a time.
  • Install a Firewall. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Please see Understanding and Using Firewalls. Do not use more than one firewall. If you are using Windows XP SP2 the rather poor Windows Firewall is enabled by default and you will need to disable it before installing another one.
  • Install Ad-aware and Spybot-S&D and scan with them regularly. They will each catch items the other may miss and can clean some of the leftovers off since you have just been cleansed of an infection. Spybot-S&D also has some good prevention features. See these links:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer
  • Install SpywareBlaster. SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. See the link below:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
  • Install IE-SPYADS. This script will place an enormous number of web sites known to be abusive into Internet Explorer's "Restricted Zone". Any site in that list will be unable to run javascripts, java applets, set or read cookies or use ActiveX scripting. You still will be able to visit those sites but they will be very limited in what they can do.
Download it from HERE. Read the "ReadMe.txt" included with the download for help installing it. You will need to download new versions occasionally and uninstall the old version.
  • Keep these programs updated. If you do not they will not help you very much.
  • Read the doxdesk prevention article at http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/prevention.html for some more tips to prevent infection.
