:matrix: You can use some of these for Vista. Adding them won't hurt vista (I've tried)

If you could help me discover errors, add your own suggestions etc. That'd be just great.

Of course I do lulz. This isn't for ordinary Joe. This is for techies.

There are a great deal of hacks in here that can't be done without registry changes.

It simply eliminates the need to do all the unnecessary clicking. All you have to do is double click it and click yes.

What I'm asking for by posting it is an identification of errors, some suggestions for more registry hacks, bad hacks, etc.

"MenuShowDelay"="1" ;----Menu Delay (time in miliseconds)

Completely agree, this is my personal settings. I change the delay to 150 for ordinary users

"AutoEndTasks"="1" ;------ Automatically ends tasks when they are closed

"HungAppTimeout="1"

"WaitToKillAppTimeout"="1" ; ----------Time to wait to shutdown an application (miliseconds)

I've definetly seen Pro's outweigh cons. Especially in terms of shutdown time.

"ForegroundLockTimeout"=dword:00000000

Do explain on this one.

"PowerOffActive"="1" ;-----Powers off automatically at shutdown

Powers down the monitor when the screen saver is active or something, if I'm not mistaken.

No it powers of the machine when you shut it down. I can understand that you would mistake this one. For new machines they are already programed to power off after you have shut them down. However for the dinosaur computers out there, the power will still be on even after the user has pushed the shutdown button and shut down their computer.

"IconTitleWrap"="0" ;---------Allows viewing of the total text of a icon's title

0 is supposed to truncate the text.

Really? It does the opposite for me.

"MaxConnectionsPerServer"=dword:00000016 ;Changes the maximum amount of downloads (4) to 16 for faster page rendering

"MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server"=dword:00000016 ;Changes the maximum amount of uploads (4) to 16 for faster page rendering

I've definetly seen Pro's outweigh cons. Especially in terms of shutdown time.

I rarely find myself in situations where shutdown speed matters. Certainly less often than situations where blowing away processes could be a problem.

Do explain on this one.

That's supposed to control the delay between user input and windows jumping to the foreground. I would think the problem would be obvious.

No it powers of the machine when you shut it down.

Google it.

IINM those violate USELESS RULES THAT NO ONE PAYS ATTENTION TO ANYMORE

Er, no. It's safe to go a bit higher than the recommendation but that's excessive. Not to mention that it doesn't do what the comment describes.

I rarely find myself in situations where shutdown speed matters. Certainly less often than situations where blowing away processes could be a problem.

The users I work with prefer a faster shutdown when they are restarting their computer for whatever reason. This way the processes in the background don't take ages to end.

Do explain on this one.

I still do not see the problem with this.

No it powers of the machine when you shut it down.

Google it.

It seems we were both incorrect. "To enable power-off on logon screen

Modify the value of "PowerOffActive" and set it to 1 "

It depends on the speed of your internet connection how high the number should be.

It depends on the speed of your internet connection how high the number should be.

I thought the maximum number of connections to establish in IE was recommended to be 10.

Your internet connection might be fast but increasing this value has the effect of putting more stress on website servers that you visit thereby inflicting some performance issues. As a matter of fact, some sites can detect too many concurrent connections from a single source and will block the source.

Not even going to go there.

First even a geek techie knows better than to mess around in the registry when there are perfectly good applications and built in windows settings to make the changes with safely.

It is unwise to mess with things you really do not understand; and since I respect JCLs understanding of such things; I doubt that you truely understand what you are talking about here.

You have found a bunch of "scripts and hacks" on the net and think you are smart by posting them here to those who have been there done that and know the risks.

I too have seen a general consesus at 10ish however when I ran this test I got better results "Good data stream (no/few rexmits)" when having 16 connections vs 10.

Those registry keys don't affect that particular test. Java applets manage their own network connections and the applet that drives that test only creates two connections, only one of which is active at any given time. You can confirm this by watching netstat while the test is running -- look for connections on remote ports 8085 and 8086 -- or by disassembling the applet.

Also, your hack set the maximum number of connections to twenty-two, not sixteen. DWORD values are expressed in hex.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that before jcl.

I appreciate when you actually discuss the hacks and don't degrade them because of "Danger"

Registry tweaking can be extremely useful if your business is time oriented. Yes I completely realize 90% of these hacks can easily be done by doing them windows. I do registry hacking for pure speed because it allows to me to change the settings very quickly. Since I charge by the hour, being quick produces a happy customer and thusly i get more business.

Are there any other contextual errors I made or registry hacks that don't do what they say?

And what does the maxconnections do by the way, could you explain it?
