Ubuntu 8.4

ime not having sucess with ubuntu 8.4

on two machines

i get a freezing curser

and ime not able to install

ime sure it has to do with sys specs

i can install all versions up to this bugger

and when i install 7.10

it gives me the option to upgrade to 8.4

which ive tried several times

but it aborts the install

i have a compt with bigger

specs

but i have vista

on it and ime not sure if 8.4 will

install on that sys

if it dosent and corrupts vista ime in that stuff

so if any one can give me ideas

i would appreciate it

ive emailed the center concerned

but havent recieved a reply

i think linux has pooed this one

like microsoft with vista

i have a friend who had ubuntu 8.4 installed successfully

but it was done at a

compt shop

at $75 an hr

so i might stay with ubuntu 7.10

or win exp

witch i have as a dual boot

bloody compts

why wasent i born a window cleaner

Ubuntu 8.10 is due out this month, marty ( in 10 days). You could try an Ubuntu 8.10 live CD and see if that will boot-up your system.

Another option is to try to use the wubi install and have Ubuntu run within windows. That is a less invasive way to run Ubuntu.

I'm waiting for 8.10 as well. Intrepid Ibex is supposed to have the latest stable kernel which should allow my wireless and audio adapter to work. Don't really know a lot about Linux to upgrade the kernel in 8.04.

I'm running 8.04 on a pentium M laptop thats a few years old. I had a hard time installing until I reformatted the drive.

I was also happy to find setting up the broadcom wireless is no longer a huge pain in the bottom. I've been using the laptop for work so I'm not sure I'm going to jump right into 8.1... ok maybe I will.

Ubuntu 8.04 is a long term support version ( supported until 2011) But, yeah, I'm like you I like to always run the latest and greatest.

what sort of specs do you need to run 8.4

in regards to cpu- memory-

the compt i want ot use

has a cpu at 1 gig

memory 512 mgs

a 16gig hdd i have an 80hdd

if i need to

would a partitioned hdd work

in the past ive used the full

drive

with negtive results

and what so annoyng

in the years ive used linux

this is the first time ive had problems

ive tried cleaning the drive

i have a floppy here that sends your hdd to zero

and a maxtor floppy that

cleans and formats

maybe using a partition will work

A 1 GHz cpu with 512 MB of RAM and a 16 GB HD is plenty for Ubuntu 8.04, marty. Sure you could partition the 16 GB HD, I would leave at least 8 GB for Ubuntu (if you're saving lots of media files add more space of course).

have you tried the alternate installer. its text based so issues during install don't affect it. most lock ups are due to low specs are related to live CD GUI's and the amount of memory needed.

Agreed. The text-based installer is perfect for lower memory units. It isn't as user friendly as the GUI version, but, it will ask you the same questions.
