This is a parallel printer right?

see if lp is loaded

sudo lsmod | grep lp

if not then try

sudo modprobe lp

then from a browser enter

localhost:631

and go to printers..

you should be able to add the printer (it will have you log in I think)

also you can try some of these tricks

https://help.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/desktopguid...figuration.html

let me know how that goes..

I will be out of town after tomarrow afternoon, so If I don't get back to you by then, hitest or anyone else should be able to help

Great to hear you got your printer working, marty:-) Ubuntu 8.04 has exceptional hardware detection; I'm running 8.04 on one unit at work.

For your information, marty, you can use the ubuntu 8.04 CD to check-out your computer before you install it to your hard drive. Boot into live mode (the top choice) then you can see if your sound card, video card, network card and printer works with 8.04 before you install. If everything checks out then install 8.04.

THANKS HI TEST

i tried it on a test machine

and it imstalled ok but every now and then the sys froze

tho it was operational when i rebooted

but bloosy annoying when i had to reboot

yes you cauld be right on with compatable hard ware

ive just installed

a version of visat on one of these machines

and ubuntu is by far the better

other than this 8.4

which ile work on

my opinion is microsoft has mad a hash of vista

so hopefully ubuntu can capitalise on that

Agreed. B)

I think that MS provided a good marketing opportunity for alternative operating systems with Vista's roll-out. I think that Apple and Linux will continue to benefit from Vista's less than enthusiastic reception.

as ime not familiar with apple

i cannot comment

but in regards to

linux

as i use it more

i found other than windows xppro

it is by far the better product

one of the earlier problems

users who accessed wondows

found linux another dimention

and like my self

i found it very hard to get away from the

wondows concept

now i promote linux to every one in my earea

ive got disks from shipit and given them away to the not so linux

gurus

[tho 8.4 ]has me gnashing my teeth

no ime dissappointed with this version of visat

but ime ony paying for what i can afford
