I would try the upgrade, install 7.10 then use the package manager to update.

was this a cd you burned? or did you get it mailed to you?

and did you do a cd check at the start (I think its a menu Item when you boot the CD)

Yeah, the ubuntu install CD does have an option on boot-up where you can check the integrity of the install media. In other words the install CD will check itself to see if it is okay to use to install Ubuntu 8.04. If that check fails then you need to re-burn your disk image at a lower rate, marty.

The package manager will have a button where you can select to upgrade to 8.04. That is a reasonable, safe upgrade in my opinion. Back-up your data prior to the upgrade in case things don't upgrade properly.

hi thanks for your replys

the cd i got from shipit

and normally they have been reliable

as an amateur

im not sure in a case like this

however ive got it installed

by installing ubuntu 7.10

then upgrading to ubuntu 8.4

i find it a bit more intense than past ubuntu

sys's

but

it is on now so my interest is in trying to get round the sys

i like the package option

from the other

ubuntu sys

ime going to need your help

as i know you both are experts

Heh-heh, agreed!

I'm no expert, the way I've learned about Linux is making a lot of mistakes.........over and over again. :)

i have dual booted with windows

but once ime able to work out ubuntu ile delete windows

as i have two compts

ime have the scope to

learn

you mention the help files are in the boot up

if i was to install 8.4

Congratulations, marty! I'm happy to hear that you got 8.04 installed! Yes. Ubuntu 8.04 is very good at finding printers, hardware! :matrix:
