Mail Delivery System Overload

Recommended Posts

I checked my email this morning and had over 600 "Mail Delivery System" type error messages. I've checked through the day and I'm still receiving them. The "From" and "Subject" lines vary in wording, but all indicate the a mail server somewhere is rejecting mail sent from me. Could I have some sort of Malware that is sending SPAM or worse from my machine. I have an up-to-date version of AVG 7.5 running on my machine and I also ran it this morning after I detected the problem. It only found a few tracking cookies.

Here's the HijackThis log:

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for the fast response. I'm glad the log looks clean.

How do I confirm the restrictions you suggest below?

Thanks,

Andy

Howdy, if you remember placing them there then its ok to just leave them like they are.

If you don't remember putting them there then remove them. Usually they are placed there by an anti-spyware program like SpyBot's Immunize feature

Its ok to remove them if you want, if so follow instructions below. The choice is yours.

Close all programs down, leaving only HijackThis running.

Open HJT ..... Place a check against the following items: If present.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Click fix with all browsers closed.

Congratulations you are clean! :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP or Vista then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide

or

Windows Vista System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

(Vista users must ensure that any programs are Vista compatible BEFORE installing)

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5.2

Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Find here changes from older version 1.4 here

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0

Download it from here

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol

Download it from here

Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound

You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here

The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.

Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

Secunia Software Inspector

F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

http://www.update.microsoft.com

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing!

Chuck
