The GUI or Graphic User Interface is a shell which runs on windows to give you the user an interface. The standard one is Explorer.exe

Products such as Windowblinds http://www.stardock.com/products/windowbli...guide_final.htm allow you to skin or change the appearance of the standard gui.

Alternatively you could use a different application (For example in win9x you could use fileman to have the same gui experience as win3.11) Alternatively you could replace it with command.exe and have only a text interface with the windows kernel.

There are other alternative gui environments you can use such as NAL

Shell shocked has some more options

Of course messing with the shell and gui is best left to experts since you could make windows non bootable or not accessible to the average user.

The registry is an instructional set for windows on how to deal with things. In the past there were two permanent files (each with multiple backups) which comprised the registry USER.dat and System.dat .

XP however uses many separate hiv files (hives) which are used to build a new registry from scratch each time you boot up.

Registry editiors allow you to access and read and even alter the contents of these files .

Other than that not sure what you are asking about.

I take it that you are a researcher of some sort who will be asking people who have knowledge of the registry and and GUI of windows XP questions which you do not understand and you are looking for some help so you do not sound totally idiotic???
