hi all

take heed

in the last few weeks ive switched to kubuntu

on a dual boot with xp

at the moment i do not use windows

but each day i get these kubuntu security up dates

and now my cable cap which is 5gig

is nearly finished until the 18-12-2007

kubuntu and ubuntu are real resource hogs

if your not wealthy

\and go to the next cap level

which is 10gig

so i may have to give it a miss

in all the years of reading about the windows sys

beeing a hog for resources

and this has never happened to me before

with windows

so my advice if you want to use ubuntu or kubuntu

make sure you have the gig cap

with enough in hand

luckly my isp notified me and warned if i

went over the cap i would be paying double

as the securitys updates are five times more than windows

i know many will say these sys do not let bugs

into the sys

because of the up dates

but i have never had any problems with

xp resources

ime a bit dissapointed with this result as i

was starting to like both ubuntu and kubuntu

and i cant afford them

how many posters are like me

wow you have caps in NZ? most of us are used to unlimited, but in eaither case.

you do not need all security updates? I say agian, you do not need all security updates.

here is why,

in windows the security updates are for everyone, because windows updates only fix the OS

in Ubuntu there are 100 of other non os progrmas and they put out patches when they are ready, and most are not security they are bug fixes.

here is the rule of thumb, if you do not use the software that is being patched, then uncheck its box. or note the patch and ask one of us to mail you a disk with them, I can do that.

remember the updates are for everything installed on ubuntu while in windows its only the Core OS..

Trust me the US Navy has this same mind set that they must download and test every patch, and they came to the conclusion that Linux must be less secure because its always being fixed.

after a couple days of talks, they finally got the picture that they may not need all the patches at all, but are so ingrained in the windows patch Tuesday's, that they cant get over all the patches..

also since Linux is open they let you know when there are issues, so they are stuck fixing them. I know many a MS worker her 20 miles out of Redmond, and all will tell you that windows has security holes they plan on never fixing.

here is another rule of thumb

if it works don't just get the newest version unless it contains things you want. I ignore most if not all kbuntu/ubuntu patches as I do not need the upgrades.

just something to think about.

You could avoid the unnecessary updates by stripping everything except gutsy-security (or whatever) out of sources.list, no?

Agreed. marty could do that:-) If you do modify your sources.list ,marty, I would keep a back-up of sources.list in a saved directory in case apt breaks. Also, as iccaros said you could just pick and choose which updates to apply. I would update your version of Fire Fox as that patch becomes available. As iccaros said, you don't need to update things that you don't regularly use. if you don't update everything then you could probably avoid exceeding your cap.

I hope you can continue to use Linux, marty:-) You've come a long way. :)

unfortunately as a new user

ime not sure which ones to down load

and which ones to leave

it is probably better for me to

check the ones ime familiar with

and leave the others until i know what they are for

thanks hi-test

i feel ive advanced a little way

tho ime a long way from trouble free

but with out the help of you -iccaros- and jcl

ide be a long way up the creek

so ime appreciative

of you guys

strang thing about this cap thing

tho it is much faster

than dial up on dial up i had unlimited resources

for $10

i could surf till the cows come home

to go to the next cap level

10 gig

i couldnt afford it

so i have to watch what i down load

my problem was mainly inexperience with linux
