I have two computers, both running Win98SE, connecting to an Aten 5 port hub, then into an Alcatel DSL modem. I just bought a new system, running XP Home and I would like to connect it to my network so I can transfer files before decommissioning the oldest computer.
I tried to use the XP's network setup wizard to add the new cpu to the network but it didn't work. Could this be an XP / 98 version conflict or maybe a configuration problem with protocols?
While checking recent threads at G4, I followed this link network rules It says you shouldn't need netbios for the network so I tidied up my settings by removing netbios protocols and dialup settings. But my network would not work unless I reinstalled netbios.
So I followed the advice on that link and installed the IPX/SPX/NETBIOS protocol on the new system, reran the wizard and still no network with the old systems. There must be something I'm missing, but what?? Do I need netbios because of my hookup? Why won't the wizard do it's job?

My friend asked me to look at his system because he was getting too many popups. I installed Spybot, Spywareblaster, Adaware, A squared, freesurfer, zonealarm. I updated and ran the programs and got rid of a lot of garbage, but am still getting popups. I also diabled Messenger service. Something must be too deeply imbedded to get rid of without a bit of extra help. So here is his log, if someone can have a look I would really appreciate it.

A friend has asked me to look at his computer because he is being inundated by popups -mainly from casino sites. I an burning a CD of programs to install - Spybot, spywareblaster, adaware, a squared, ems freesurfer, zonealarm. I also have printed the instructions to disable messenger service. I have installed these on many 98 systems, but never on an XP system, so I have a couple of questions.
1. From what I've read, installations should be done from the admin. account. Yes??
2. If done from the admin account, are programs automatically active for all profiles?
Thanks in advance for your advice and it's good to see you great helpers settling in after the recent upheavals.

I tried 3 times to set up the network following instructions at these sites and still when I click "view workgroup computers" or check network neighborhood, the win 98 computers can't see the xp computer and vice versa.
