  1. the moddings forum has kinda died with the absence of brianholiday. He and KB were really keep this board going.

Sorry about being away from the modding forum so long. My work is such that I can't get out here during the day anymore. Along with being busy, they also block this set of IPs for some reason. Unfortunately, none of that is about to change either. :(

  2. Hi Brian_Holiday. We used to have one, I wrote most of it. However, whoever makes decisions there decided that it should be taken down. There was a big vote over it, but we lost. :(

Edit: here's some info on what happened.

Talk about patently unfair. Can I assume sock puppets are multiple accounts used to skew a vote?

  3. I passed this off to a buddy today, and thought I would pass it on to you guys too.

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/indiftpd

A stand alone FTP server (no installation required, even on locked down machines). I run it from a pen drive so I can copy files back and forth between windows machines without setting up windows networking. By default, allows full access to all directories below the one it is launched from, with anonymous guest access. You can add security if you want it to be more secure.

    indiftpd.exe -h Gives help.

    Enjoy!

  4. I hate to say it, but they look photoshopped. All the same truck, and the brick pole in the background is in the same place, though sometime it is blurred...

But it doesn't detract from the art, I like it.

  5. This is done with no malice and is not meant to be a flame.

"so figure out of that six million, approximately 1% to 2% will jump ship. thats six to twelve thousand people"

Do the math again, that is 60k to 120k people. Another 60k Linux people would be very good for the Linux community.

No one can argue that piracy is wrong. Someone spent their capital on producing the software and they deserve a return. In this day and time, there are free alternatives for every program from OS to Audio. If you dont want to pay a hundred bucks for the OS, download a Linux distro. I GUARANTEE you will spend more than a hundred dollars of your personal time coming up to speed. M$ products are for the masses, those that don't want to put effort in something else. Just cave in and buy it....

Having said that, I am opposed to a callback feature in any software. M$ use of an internet connection I pay for to spy on me is unacceptable. I didn't like dongles on Autocad, and I don't like this.

  6. The goverment tried to get rid of poverty in New Orleans, but apperently people in that "chocolate city" could swim. Who knew?

    J/king :D

Be nice. We don't need to get that debate stirred up in here. New Orleans proved one thing to me, don't depend on the local, state, or federal government for protection. All it takes is one weak link and you are living in the superdome. Food, water, ammo, power. Then you can ride it out on your own.

  7. Did I detect a note of sarcasm? :D

The point is, there is poverty everywhere. No one in America starves to death unless by their own idiocy. Anyone in this country can get food and shelter for the cost of filling out a form <food stamps/ shelters>. You can rent a shack for $75 a month in some parts of the country. You can even get a college education for free <Berea college> if you are willing to work for it. Our poverty is most often self inflicted. If you look at the true poor you find druggies, alcoholics, freeloaders, and people with mental illness. The problem is we actually have the FREEDOM to be poor. No one is going to force you to go to rehab and get a job. No one takes your kids because you won't work to support them. No one prevents you from using your food stamps for junk food. Sound harsh? I can say this because I came from these people, lived as the poorest of the poor, and chose to get out with little help from my parent or the crappy government education system. My friends got out too, and we are all living middle class in the USA.

Marty, don't believe everything you read in the press. It really isn't as bad here as they would have you believe.

  8. Nah. That looks like something a Kentuckian would have.

I second, decidedly Eastern Kentucky build. And it isn't an RV, that is a full time house. Chances are that the engine was sold for alc-i-hol...:)

I spent nearly 10 years of my youth in Eastern Kentucky. Rent "American Hollow" to get an idea, I lived about 30 miles away. No education, no work, they dont even offer welfare there. Most live off of food stamps, growing smokables, ginseng, and social security diability. Inner city poor have it good compared to these people.

  9. I don't see how you can sleep at night, the clock keeps me awake. :) What are using to cut it? The edges are a little rough, and from my experence you get a better glow when the edges are smooth and opaque. You also might get more light if you silver the bottom with some paint. I wish someone would give me some acrylic..:) It sucks to be grown up...;)

  10. THG Germany did it, but they suggest using motor oil cause it cools better. They used vegetable oil though cause it's clearer, and maybe cheaper. I'm not if it is cheaper. still it is HARD to do. Caulk and plexiglass, (you don't have to use plexiglass but still), you have to change the oil every so often. Talkin to your friends " Hey I gotta run, Need to change the oil in my computer."

    :)

Do you have a link for that project? The way I see it, you could just buy a ready made box of some kind and slide it in. If it is sitting in motor oil, you aren't going to be able to see it anyway. I may have to move this to my to-do list. This might be a good way to 'environmentalize' a pc for outdoor use.

  11. I don't frequent any robotics groups, so I am hoping that someone can refer me to a better source if they don't have an answer. Google has been no help

I am looking into building a robotics project using a parallax servo RC controller to control standard RC servos. I only need 4 servos for the project, but I have 16 availible for use. I want to use a few of the spare controller feedback lines as sensors for limit switches. The question is, can I do this?

The way I understand servos is they are essentally trying to match 2 signals. The position signal from the controller (the desired position) with the actual position which comes from a variable resistor. The servo controller sends a signal to the motor to turn, until the values match, then it stops. The controller I will be using has the ability to sense the position of the variable resistor and report it back at any time. So if I just remove the servo and replace it with a switch, possibly paired with a resistor to simulate a real positions value, the controller would attempt to drive the non-existent motor until the switch is depressed. If tuned correctly, the switch would simulate and feed back a single position to the controller, effectively setting up a yes/no situation.

If this seems like a $100 fix to a $5 problem, realize that I have unused servo controler slots on the board and I would have to buy or build another circuit to interface switches via a USB device.

    TIA,

  12. why not use passive liquid cooling like the case being completely filled with vegetable oil or motor oil. Yes you can do that, I have a video of it.

I'll never do that due to the time, money, effort, skill, and patience involved.

I actually have a net-friend that is doing that with power supplies. I have considered doing an immersion mod like this. The problem is, I can't justify the work. The main issue is that my PC is fast enough to do what I want to do, and when it isn't we are looking at an $250 upgraded MB and chip. Since I don't stress the machine, I really have no reason to cool it with more than a $12 cooler.

The one problem with oil cooling is there doesn't seem to be a perfect solution for the oil. Mineral oil swells the caps and messes up the MB, and most of the cooking oils people use aren't clear. I found a neat green Electronic Discharge Machining (EDM) fluid that looked like the perfect coolant once, but now I can't find a source. There is a flourine compound (IIRC) that will work, but it is $250 a gallon.

So I guess this qualifies as a mod I will never do...:)

  13. But the dang thing is too bright, it woke me up!

    LOL

Another mod I would never do:

    A Humidore PC.

Why? Because it has been done often, and it's been done extremely well. I have too many of my own ideas floating around in my head...:)

  14. I have done this before, and it has worked out well so I will do it here.

This thread is for mods you probably won't ever do, for whatever reason.

    Mod #1 I probably won't ever attempt:

A clear acrylic case PC. Why? Because It would last about half a day, and I would scratch it, drop solder on it, or crack it. Then that little blemish would drive me crazy. :(

P.S. At the request of someone I respect, I am going to add a bit of the reason I posted this link.

I am sincerely conflicted about the use of this pen. On one hand, I empathize with people who might be offended by the use of a religious taboo in such a way. But I balance that against the the possibility that if something like this could stop a single nutcase from killing one busload of innocent women a children anywhere in the world it would be worth accepting the moral outrage of people who feel insulted. Perhaps that is my culture, my upbringing, my country, but if feeling personally insulted is the price I pay for a single life of an innocent anywhere in the world feel free to make me the whipping boy for the entire planet.

I will however grant, that since I am on the heels of hearing of a Turkish film starring Billy Zane and Gary Busey where Zane plays a US Military commander that captures Arab children and turns them over to a Jewish doctor so he could harvest organs for sale to Jews and Americas it may not be the best time for me to comment in a logical way. When comic strips send people on murderous flag burning rampages, it is a little difficult for me to feel sympathy for the insulted.
