It's sad when you have to think about it

I'm learning how to use Adobe Indesign CS2 (for yearbook at school, we switched from Pagemaker), reassemblying my PC after I just changed out the chipset fan, and learning Social Engineering (also known as deceiving people using social skills and knowledge)

Here's how it goes... If you set a Windows XP password on the Home Version or even on 2000 PRO, it can be cracked in a minute using a simple floppy disc tool. Windows XP Pro passwords can be obtained by booting off a Linux CD, navigating to the sytem32 folder and getting the NT password HASH (which can be Bruteforce attacked quickly if it's simple, dictionary word, simple phrase, ect) A BIOS password will prevent all computer access (without a password) but I believe the CMOS being cleared on some MOBO's will delete your password. So... it's a little ominous, but I'd go with the BIOS password

Since you were messing around with the splash screen and it immediatly led to the problem. I'd say it's most definitly a result of your problem. You mentioned that you cleared the BIOS? Do you mean the CMOS (which you can clear by moving the jumper or by flipping the battery to short the contacts)? If that doesn't work, you can seach on your MOBO's website for a BIOS flashing tool to put on a floppy disk. If your splash screen changes interfered with normal BIOS activities, you might be able to change the BIOS (I believe ASUS has a CPR backup thing that could be comprable to Gigabyte)

Even though you said you are set on one of those two ... I'm going to push you towards a widescreen LCD. I got an Acer 19" Widescreen LCD for roughly $215 on a Newegg Deal.

Like Hondaboy said, it's most likely an IDE. I highly doubt the board has SATA since it's a Gateway (not cost productive for them to have additional unused features) Go with Seagate (5 year warrenties) or WD. It's worth the extra $5 for a good drive versus a Samsung or other brand

I ran into the exact problem a few months ago. Of course I decided to install (and uninstall because of problems) Ubuntu during the same timeframe that my mom was working on someone's wedding invitations. What I did was reinstall GRUB (but not Ubuntu) and run a repair install on XP (after trying FIXMBR and FIXBOOT which didn't work for me for some odd reason) so the regular XP boot loader was back in business. The PC would boot into GRUB, then I would boot into Windows (I left the computer on 24/7 so my parents wouldn't get confused when the computer attempted to default boot into Linux) E

This might be a stretch but it has worked for me before. Have your original drive set up to boot and have only the power cable to your new drive. As Windows just begins to load (after the successful post) plug in the SATA data cable. This should initialize the drive to work on your PC I ran into a similar problem when working with a cheapy Biostar board that wouldn't recognize a SATA drive

LOL

But it doesn't list what new or how this is better like the old versions did. Just list what's being done and the % it done. No complaints with that! Those screens get old after 50+ installs!

I did the same thing when I called ASUS, when school's out there is no reason to count days

How is the installation process? I mean, how is it different from XP?

If you just want to backup files from the PC - crack it open and remove the hard drive. Then, set your other PC's drive to master (it's probably on CS), and the removed one to slave. It should come up under my computer for faster and easier copying. From what I know, networking with 98 is a little tricky

You should be able to snag some deals easily if you just watch the bi-weekly sales. (such as: Corsair XMS 2x1GB is around $110 this week!)

you are saying my ME oem cd will not work with all ME oem COAs?

Sounds like a rumor. Unless of course they have a deal w/ Microsoft where they install the same XP key on 2 billion computers, but pay for the license on each and put the sticker on it. Just a theory
