  1. My favorite things is when the Microsoft people ask you if you have installed this copy of Windows on more than one computer - I'm always tempted to be like "yeah, it's on this one and like 25 other ones, and I plan on loaning it to my buddy tomorrow"
  2. Would it be possible to install XP on a "Emergency Partition" like 5G or something. If I did that, how would I be able to boot up the secondary operating system since I REALLY don't want to see two XP choices EVERY TIME I boot up
  3. My main reason for partitioning is for performance and organization. I think a 50G partition for XP and programs would be good. I will most likely divide the remaining 200G into two more partitions for better organization. I downloaded a multi-use Windows Ultimate Boot CD with several programs I can use to partition. I already know that XP needs to be on a NTFS file system, but do I also make the other paritions NTFS?
  4. Setting up my system in a few days (as you might have noticed by my various questions in different topics)... But I have a Western Digital 250G SATA-300 Hard Drive and I planned on partitioning it for efficiency I already know that I want 3 separate partitions, Operating system, Applications, and Junk (MP3's and Movies) What capacity would you recommend for XP? Applications? and so on? Also, would you recommend any other partitions?
  5. I don't plan on investing in a new printer, we recently purchased a HP 4-in-1 multi everything printer, but it won't be an issue because the newer computer will almost always be on. I know how to set up Workgroup and Computer Names, but how do setup a folder where it will be accesible to both computers, and where would this folder show up (I'm assuming under My Network Places?)
  6. Gotta ya ...... can anyone tell me if I can use a brand name memory to upgrade this machine or will the compaq mobo only see compaq memory? Thank you for your time.
  7. Unfortunetly you're kind of limited for an operating system if you want to avoid foreign tech support. At least I am because I never plan on loading Linux
  8. Okay, in about a week I will have my new computer running and I would like to have it networked to my older computer. The old one will be in the basement (directly connected to my Linksys router) while the new one will be upstairs (still in it's range with a PCI Wireless Card) I would like to be able to send files from computer to computer (mainly downloading files from the internet off the old one, and sending them to the new) and to be able to print from both computers (I planned on connecting the printer to the new computer) Would their be any additional hardware needed for the setup I wan
  9. Just called 5 minutes ago for work - I JUST LOVE CALLING MICROSOFT
  10. If the heatsink/fan is really bad - have a can of air and a vaccum handy because it can get messy, especially if you have alergies
  11. I agree, there is really no point in spending your money just because you have it. Just throw it in a bank account and wait until you get $1500 - then go crazy!
  12. Linksys pissed me of too. I was installing my wireless router and all I ended up needing was to go to their website (linksys.com/easy) to download a new driver, but I the person (once again, not American) had me unplug everything and replug it like 25 times! I learned a fun trick when Microsoft people piss me off. When they start reading out the numbers, pause for a really long time and ask for them to repeat them OVER AND OVER. Make them feel the same you do for having an idiot on the other end of the line!
  13. I've never had the pleasure of contacting Dell, but have you ever called Microsoft to reactivate Windows? Shoot me in the head several hundred times - please! Every now and then I have to call in for work, and each call follows the pattern of: Read off a 30-some digit code to a computer Hold for 15-30 Minutes Read the SAME code to an operator :cough not American cough: Type in the code they read off to you - and it's almost impossible to understand some of them There you go, when I am on my deathbed, I am going to with back for the hours wasted calling in to Microsoft
  14. I beleive he was referring to if yoy had switched the motherboard, because there was a proprietary PSU, you would run into trouble if you ever had to restore your computer because the HP recovery console would not work with the different motherboard's drivers
  15. It should open up, and you would be better off just getting a new power supply, not an entirely new case, The case had a 235Watt PSU, so it will be inexpensive to replace. Could you describe the case? If it is relatively new Compaq should have pics online
  16. Good news everyone! I just got done cleaning 2 more systems IDENTICAL to this one today - and by identical I mean totally (that includes the ammount of dust) Fortunetly I found out they were from a warehouse environment, which resurected my hopes in society Until... I cracked open an HP making a funny noise and - you guessed it - CAKED IN SOLID DUST AHH!
  17. If her laptop has integrated WIFI, or a adaptor card it should be as easy as going start>connect to>wireless connections Your connection should show up on the laptop and you just have to connect to it
  18. Funny, I saw this at the Super Wal-Mart for about $100 today, anybody who buys there is getting RIPPED OFF
  19. Benefits of a Windowed case - constant reminders when to clean!
  20. There was a picture on ebaumsworld.com along time ago with a snake in the power supply fan - gross
  21. I worked on another one a while ago that was in a barn If you're not familiar with North Carolina, instead of regular soil it has red clay - anyways, there was red clay caked up inside the case, God awful to clean
  22. He we go, This is a computer that I had to fix at work (keep in mind this pic is after I STARTED CLEANING IT - it started off worse) Suprisingly enough, it was actually a fairly decent PC (PIII 1GHZ, 256 RAM, Windows 2000 So I'm opening this up - What is the worst condition you've ever seen a computer in?
