  1. People complain about everything, everywhere! I won't even get started (yet...)
  2. So I had to make some signs for Student Gov't elections ... so I "modded" one. It's a regular sign on white poster board "Vote Boehm, Senior Class Vice President" but I put to platters with about 10 White LED's each on the top. I wired them into a AC 12 Volt adaptor for juice (they are BRIGHT) So... p.s. I'm running uncontested!
  3. you are assumbing the mother board uses a standard atx powersupply. I do not think it does. I am not sure though. True, I was just thinking about size/format
  4. That would be impractical if the person wishes to keep it as is. That is a vintage PC. Oh, you mean they don't want to put it in a "pre-mod" case with loads of LED's and sound activated lights?!?!
  5. You can always have them just put the thing in a new case (i'm assuming the issue if finding a PSU to fit their case)
  6. did his shop slowdown in april? I ask becasue I was getting steady calls(and jobs, maybe three per week) for the months of Jan, Feb, and March. April and May have been horrible, I have not even been getting a job a week. Being a very new business, I am not sure what to expect. I was kind of hoping this is the slow time of year for everyone(not just me). Yeah it slowed down throughout April, but its starting to pick back up. Last week he sold 3 New computers (people generally buy used ones here) that he's had here for 6 months. Tuesday we are going to go back to building custom PC's to fill
  7. Hate to sound stupid, but what is Flux?
  8. I'm calling it on a faulty power supply (or even, less likely bad RAM or a flaky power switch on the case, if you've been messing around inside it all the switch is possibly the problem)
  9. That's rediculous man - honestly I wouldn't want to be associated with that type of crap (you might as well just join the Geek Squad at Best Buy) That's 2x as much as the place I work at charges for most of the stuff. Just get your business going, establish an honorable reputation for having honest prices and good work and you're better off. Besides, I get paid $7.50 and hour, and lately I'm getting paid to keep my boss company.
  10. Clicks ussually signify your drive head hitting something, ussually the platter. IMO opinion, BACK UP EVERYTHING IMPORTANT, and just keep on using your computer. Check to see if SMART is enabled in your BIOS and that will give you a heads up if the HDD if about to fail (I don't really trust Speedfan's as much as I do the BIOS)
  11. do you need to solder the new one in? I don't know - my boss use to handle all the laptops. I can see where some soldering would be envolved. If you want to practice, you can get a cheap solder iron from Radioshack (even though solder stations are the way to go, but they cost more) and take apart any electronic crap you have lying around. De solder capacitors and resistors and work on getting them back in there. It took me around a week to get it down where I could easily do the basics. After I purchased a solder station with a controllable temperature, it's just like boom, switch part (
  12. The power connector? Gotcha, have seen a lot of those broken now that you mention it - we usually replace the actual connector - of course there is a $100 charge just for opening up a laptop (some shops around here charge close to $200 for it)
  13. What connector are you referring to?
  14. I've only seen soldering on a motherboard once (changed a broken video connector) so it's pretty rare - other then that, I've only had to solder broken fans and stuff, but never anything with laptops
  15. Did you do a repair with recovery CD's or a normal repair. I'm assuming it was a repair, not a fresh install b/c it probably wouldn't do that. If you did - I recommend you re-reload Windows
  16. Dell's are good for entry level computers because no one can build an entry level PC with XP and a flat screen for 400 dollars - keep in mind that about half of Dell Rebates don't go through so you end up paying 600+ not the advertised 400. Also, for people who just want to use the internet - they are fine with a Windows 98 machine, 128 MB Ram, 4 GB Hard Drive - Right Terrorist?
  17. I'd just do as terrorist says and test them one by one. Remember though - if they don't work, make a note on it cause it could just be a picky MOBO0
  18. LMAO - yep, go with a locally built PC - except now you have to watch out for fly-by-night places. Funny, the only reason I interned at a local store was so that I could eventually build a PC, now I work there and I've learned more than I ever thought there was to learn (if that makes any sense!)
  19. First thing I'd recommend after buying a Dell - reload with an OEM disc using your Dell License, not the Dell Recovery CD's. I recommend that for Dell's Compaq's and HP's because all of them come preloaded with crap However, I'm doubting that the My Way the article refers to is the spyware program that plagues many computers. I could be wrong though since HP did put weatherbug on it's PC's!
