If you are working with integrated graphics you should first uninstall the drivers for that chipset, reboot into the BIOS and disable the integrated graphics. Should there be an option to "redirect" graphics output to another device, e.g. your new AGP/PCI-e graphics card, enable it. Save the settings and shut down the PC. Install the new graphics card, attach the monitor cable and boot up, then install your Catalyst drivers. When I find unidentified devices in Device Manager I just: 1. Right-click the device and select "Update Driver" 2. Select "Install the Software Automatically (Recommended)" and OK. 3. Windows will scan all locations for a driver, one being Windows Update. 4. If a driver is found it will be installed automatically. I find that Windows Update usually gets the those hard-to-find drivers. If Windows Update installs a driver and identifies the device you can easily look up any updated drivers from the manufacturer's site (usually better than the ones Windows installs).

Ever since DAP 7 I've stopped using it. It had too many ads in the window, although they could be blocked from your software firewall. I too would recommmend MetaProduct's Download Express. If you are upgrading from an old card remove the old drivers first no matter if the old card was an ATI. If it was an old nVidia card you will have to remove the Forceware drivers in order to run an ATI card with their Catalyst drivers. DVD Shrink's default setting of 'Automatic Compression' will fit the files onto a standard 4.7GB DVD. You can manually configure the compression, but the auto setting usually works best. Go with the Venice core. I believe the Venice core was a step-up from the Clawhammer core. The Winchester, Venice and San Diego cores are all 90nm SOI, whereas the Clawhammer is 130nm SOI. You may only be addressing OS updates but the OP asked about software in general in addition to updates. I am thinkin' it's one of those legacies from the past; fewer and fewer programs recommend turning of AV, AV has gotten more intelligent, installation programs have gotten more intelligent, and XP, because of the way it 'compartmentallizes' programs, probably has less of a problem with the issue. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Norton applications or any of the latest AV programs will slow down installations at times (since they usually scan files as installation files are being extracted) and

I just downloaded the new version after seeing the notice mentioned elsewhere. It did not show up in Firefox's update alert, but even then, I feel more comfortable just downloading the whole thing from the site and installing.

My Asus A8N SLI Deluxe motherboard came with a large software package and drivers. I noticed that it had an nVidia software firewall, which I never knew nVidia made. Should I use this firewall? Is it any good compared to the Windows Firewall or other free firewalls? Thanks.

You haven't seen a SLI system, have you? I have an Asus A8N SLI Deluxe but I'm using it in single GPU mode with a Radeon X800XL in one of the PCI-Express x16 lanes.
