  1. No worries, he was arrested by the Toronto police for assaulting a limo driver...

The baby-faced 19-year-old turned himself in to a Toronto police station Wednesday evening, arriving amid a crush of media and screaming fans.  He was charged with one count of assault and is scheduled to appear in court in Toronto on March 10.
  2. The 41 employees of Extreme Dodge in Jackson, Mich., are very familiar with trade-ins, but this year they’re learning about trade-offs as they come face to face with the new realities of health care. A few workers say they’re getting a great deal, but most have a severe case of sticker shock.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Twenty-six of the dealership's workers had been covered this year under the old company plan. Twenty-one have now decided to go with the new group plan recommended by the company for next year, though they realize that they face sharply higher out-of-pocket costs next year.

Their deductibles will go from $1,125 this year to $3,000 next year, and maximum out-of-pocket costs jump from $2,250 to $6,350. And for families, those numbers double: to a $6,000 deductible and $12,700 out-of-pocket maximum.

  3. Great, now we find out the developers of the site used Open Source software.

We paid this operation $100s of millions for development and they use FREE software?

Healthcare.gov, the federal government's Obamacare website, has been under heavy criticism from friend and foe alike during its first two weeks of open enrollment.  Repeated errors and delays have prevented many users from even establishing an account, and outside web designers have roundly panned the structure and coding of the site as amateurish and sloppy.  The latest indication of the haphazard way in which Healthcare.gov was developed is the uncredited use of a copyrighted web script for a data function used by the site, a violation of the licensing agreement for the software.

  4. Remember, if you already have insurance, nothing is likely to change.
That's a big "IF" your employer keeps your insurance rather than choosing to pay the fine, or kicking your hours down to 30 or under.

They may have to add some coverage which they had not offered in the past, but you won't have to do anything.
Won't have to do anything but pay more for coverage you don't want, don't need, or just plain can't afford.

Please tell me you're not drinking the kool-aid, Pete.

Anyway, I'm not talking about a website so poorly written and ill-conceived it can't handle the traffic. I'm questioning the security of such site. After all, they will have every detail of your life all in one place, ripe for the hackers from  .al, .ng, .ru, etc...

  5. Healthcare.gov forces you to create an account and enter detailed personal information before you can start shopping. This, in turn, creates a massive traffic bottleneck, as the government verifies your information and decides whether or not you’re eligible for subsidies. HHS bureaucrats knew this would make the website run more slowly. But they were more afraid that letting people see the underlying cost of Obamacare’s insurance plans would scare people away. HHS didn’t want users to see Obamacare’s true costs “Healthcare.gov was initially going to include an option to browse before registering,†report Christopher Weaver and Louise Radnofsky in the Wall Street Journal. “But that tool was delayed, people familiar with the situation said.†Why was it delayed? “An HHS spokeswoman said the agency wanted to ensure that users were aware of their eligibility for subsidies that could help pay for coverage, before they started seeing the prices of policies.â€

  6. Heh... I know I saw it all coming. Shame the voters in 2012 didn't.

They've had over 3 years to develop the site, and one guy said it's not even near a beta stage, and he said his company would hang their heads in shame if they brought out a product like it.

Don't want this to become political, I'm just concerned about the security of the data folks are expected to submit.

  7. Thanks for all your comments and help. I think maybe I was over thinking the whole thing. Way too easy to read too much and think you need what all the magazine writers talk about. I decided to just hookup my laptop, went out and bought a hdmi cable, had to download an update so the port would work and the grandson is watching a movie now. Need to figure out how to set the laptop so the other kids sticky fingers will stay away, but I think I will just work with this and see how it goes. Thanks again.

You can also have a look at Tiger Direct. We've been very happy with the several "bare bones" kits we bought. They can be had for $350-450. Our local Community Center buys refurbished models and haven't had any trouble with their 8 hour a day usage.

  8. Thanks for the reply, Pete.

We don't know if it has always been there. It was donated in pretty rough condition. (keyboard really banged up) I suspect it has been dropped.

The shadow is kinda a mountain growing from the bottom of the screen, about 1/3 of the way up, and about 4 inches wide at the bottom.

Inverter? Emitter? Same thing? If so, a cheap enough fix at $8.00.

Any way to check the lighting? Re: led or florescent?

  9. I don't want to sound sour, but queries need to be answered. Perhaps we have too many choices of topics for helpers to scan regularly.

Case in point. If we don't have experts in a field, why have the topic?

I remember when this place was booming. Help coming from every direction and Jeff even getting some revenue from google ads.

  10. Well, my friend loaded up her 2 year old Prius with her two little dogs for a 5 week road trip to escape some Michigan winter, visiting friends and family.

She drove from Kalamazoo MI, to Indianapolis, Alabama, across to Jacksonville, FL, down to Orlando, Naples, back to Jacksonville, then home to Kalamazoo.

Don't know the miles, but she spent only $199 on gas...

Heh, looking outside at the snow and ice, she should have found more stops and extended the trip for a few more weeks... :D

  11. Compac CQ60.

Screen has a "shadow", or darker spot on the bottom, center. My research says it could be the inverter, or (gasp!) the $150 screen.

Is there anyway to check before throwing parts at it? Is it worth fixing? We would sell it to a senior at our local Community Center for parts costs, and have already bought a A/C power pack, batteries, DVR, and keyboard. Total costs so far $75.

  12. A boss wondered why one of his most

valued employees had not phoned in sick one day.

Having an urgent problem with one of the main computers,

he dialled the employee's cell phone number and was greeted

    with a child's whisper.

    "Hello."

"Is your daddy home?" he asked.

    "Yes," whispered the small voice.

    "May I talk with him?"

    The child whispered, "No."

Surprised and wanting to talk with an adult,

the boss asked, "Is your Mommy there?"

    "Yes," whispered the small voice.

    "May I talk with her?"

Again the small voice whispered, "No."

Hoping there was somebody with whom

he could leave a message, the boss asked,

    "Is anybody else there?"

"Yes," whispered the child, "a policeman"

Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee's home,

the boss asked, "May I speak with the policeman?"

"No, he's busy", whispered the child.

    "Busy doing what?"

    "Talking to Daddy and Mommy

and the Fireman," the whisper answered.

Growing more worried as he heard what

sounded like a helicopter through the earpiece on the phone,

the boss asked, "What is that noise?"

"A helicopter." answered the whispering voice.

    "What is going on there?"

demanded the boss, now truly apprehensive.

    Again, whispering, the child answered,

"The search team just landed the helicopter."

    Alarmed, concerned and a

    little frustrated the boss asked,

    "What are they searching for?"

    Still whispering, the young voice

replied with a muffled giggle. "ME.!

  13. Nice to see you too, Joe, and I do accept reality. The reality that my United States has become a nation of takers.

But hey, I understand you progressives need your entitled and dependents, so keep writing the checks, swiping the credit card, and borrowing from China. I always wanted to visit(become?) Greece.
