  1. You can get on-access scanning by installing the dazuko kernel module.
  2. If you can ping your router and external addresses by IP (but not by FQDN) it's more then likely your DNS settings.
  3. Moved by request. Interesting tutorial, I am sure there are many people who could find it useful.
  4. Thanks, iccaros:-) I'm currently looking at clamav, trying to figure it out, give it a try:-) Are there any half decent tutorials out there besides the readmes that come with the source code? I'll go take a look at google/linux. You should get a decent idea about it looking through the config files (/etc/clamd.conf, /etc/freshclam.conf). I use Klamav, a KDE frontend to clamav, with either if you want on access scanning you need to compile and insert the dazuko module. There are other linux AV, avg, f-prot, bitdefender, antivir and possibly others.
  5. KFloppy can format a flash drive, you need to manually add the device in the "Floppy Drive" combo box. It should be possible to add/edit a service menu to add format usb as an option(you can add services in control center > storage media). My plan was to add a format service with sudo /usr/sbin/mkfs.vfat %u the problem I am having getting this to work is the specifying of the device. What I mean by this is, the default command when adding a service is konqeror %u (%u repressenting a single URL more variables here) this seems to only specify the mount point, not device file. Anyone have a
  6. That must pull in every KDE app available. Kdebase pulls about 40 packages but none of the extra packages like kdegames etc...
  7. Try sudo apt-get install kdesktop Nevermind kdesktop doesn't pull in all necesary packages.
  8. So is opera, personaly I use both. I am using opera more as I've been using KDE lately (I like a more uniform look and feel).
  9. Do you get any warnings running sfdisk -d /dev/hda?
  10. Have you tried fixing the mbr from windows recovery console?
  11. It would seem no; but there does appear to be a sims 1 linux client available (not free) if thats any consolation.
  12. I haven't yet had the need to use my phone as a modem, but to access my pictures/ringtones I need to use the cdc-acm driver and from what I've read you also need it for what you want. You will also need the ppp drivers, but for most distros you should have them. 13. I signed up. Should I create a new partition to put it on( so I can keep XP) ? Thanks, Joe Why not use vmware?
  14. I believe it is a score (like a midi), maybe try http://www.myriad-online.com/en/products/harmony.htm or http://www.finalemusic.com/notepad/
  15. I am not exactly sure. In plumbing it is used to help the solder both flow and bind to the metal. I believe it is used in the same way for electronics. It is, I've worked for electronics manufacturers and they used it and never damaged anything. Ive only seen it used for whole boards not single parts if it makes any diference.
  16. do you need to solder the new one in? As a generalization I would say yes considering the limited number of laptops I have dis-assembled.
  17. Pretty much anything that can break on a laptop will require soldering, ie: cardbus slot, usb ports etc, etc..). Soldering is the easy part, de-soldering isn't (for me at least). Considering the cost of most oem laptop motherboards it is cost effective to repair the board. It's not a particularly hard thing to do with some practice (I suck at it because I dont practice), if you have an old motherboard or expansoin card laying around practice de-soldering and re-soldering pieces.
  18. Right click the app you want to add's icon in the menu and select add launcher to desktop.
  19. That would depend on host hardware, if he has a pentium4/athlon and ~512MiB of memory he should be ok. I think a VM is a good idea considering the hardware compatibilties he has with linux. Also vmware has several pre-built VM's (ubuntu,fedora5, frebsd, gentoo, etc), easiest way for anyone who just wants to try linux.
  20. I believe Aluvus gave the right answer on G4, 900.
  21. I installed gaim2 beta using this package (direct link). It contains 4 .deb's install gaim-data*.deb and gaim2*.deb. I dont believe I needed any other dep's.
  22. It will most likel install the 2.6.15 kernel and change menu.lst to boot that kernel, all that should be necessary is editing menu.lst.
  23. If you can get your network up you should be able to continue the apt-get dist-upgrade. As a thought what kernel did ubuntu boot when you rebooted? May have booted the new kernel prematurely.
  24. What you really want to save is the kernel config, I have yet to have a problem giong to different kernel versions with the same config. And yes it does upgrade to 2.6.15-21-386.
