  1. SpinRite6 is also a good HDD tool for this, but it's not free. It does have some major power to restore bad sectors tho and is probably one of the best I've ever used....finally something Useful from GRC.com!! Most of his other stuff is just fluff, including his port scanner, it's the easiest one to fool.

The HDD utility from Seagate will work for most brands of HDD's, others are proprietary. If there are unrecoverable sections on the HDD, you can map them so Windows will not use them again, and run a Repair Install so you don't have to go thru a full backup & install again. Repair Installs work very well, I've never had one mess up any data and I've run a few over the years, but never on a disk that has mapped bad clusters before. I can't see that making a real big difference but if you do go this route I would do a backup of any Real important info first...just in case.

  2. I d'loaded thes updates as Beta's about 2 weeks ago.

I noticed faster file transfers but I didn't have the real bad problem before that some users had with it. Every now and then I'd have an impossibly long file transfer or it would not move everything (reportedly) and then I couldn't access the original to try moving it again...that kinda stuff, and so far it seems to have fixed those issues. But I haven't done a whole lotta transfers since I installed it so I can't be certain it's fixed.

My bootups have been so painfully slow, that I just don't pay attention to it anymore...I start it and go do something for a few minutes and then come back to it. After my new RAM was installed tho, I've had a noticeable improvement in booting up

I've found Vista to be ultra fast bootups in a fresh install, but a few security program installs and some other major installs (Like Roxio 9, MS Office..etc) it just slows to a crawl. Even tho I shut down most startups and other bloat, it's still slow booting up. Like over 2 minutes slow...sometimes 3, but I remember the days of half hour bootups, so I don't complain too loudly.. :whistling:

I'm sure I could tweak a few more seconds out of it, but it's no big deal to me as long as it's blazingly fast once it gets going, that's the important part!

  3. Some chips can only handle 1 or 2 refills also, and then they're toast and you need a new cartridge.

You can't constantly be refilling the same cartridges over & over again, they just don't stand up that long, at least I've never heard of one doing that.

I never use refills anymore anyway, the ink was always garbage for the most part, and it "can" damage your printer in the worst case.

  4. First, be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that the only instance of "services.exe" is in your C:\WINDOWS\system32 directory, if you have one anywhere else as well, it's a bad guy and you'll need to post into our Malware Removal forum about it. A secondary services.exe or service.exe anywhere other than system32 can be any number of infections, including the MyDoom infection, so be ultra sure that you only have one of this and it's in the proper directory.

Services.exe (the real one) is the Windows Service controller and is responsible for starting and stopping windows services as required by the system or user configuration. It does require Internet access at times but it shouldn't be constantly downloading. It's possible that what you're seeing are Broadcast packets from this and not actual TCP packets, what protocol are you seeing with this activity (TCP, UDP, ICMP..etc), and how much of it is there? Have you done a WHOIS on the IP addy it's connecting to, to see where it's connecting?

  5. 4 sure Shane!

Not many companies will do business with someone who works out of the house, they think that they may be unreliable or "fly-by-night"'rs or sumthin along those lines. Having an actual Store location shows that you've got investment in this now and will work reliably to ensure that you don't lose it.

Get some nice cards made up now and get them circulating out there. Those little puppies are Great at drumming up business! Take out a 1/2 page ad in the local paper with your "Grand Opening" announcement, and offer a 10% discount or something, to new customers...get those people thru the door! Offer a discount on custom builds, or half off of Tune-Ups for now...anything to get feet trampling into your new doorway...that's how you'll get growing, but you should to do something to get it started.

    Best of Luck my friend!!

  6. Hi Guys

    Just an update

My new RAM arrived on Monday and you won't believe how apprehensive I was about something as simple as installing 4 sticks of RAM!!

I think it took me about 4 hours just to work up the guts to get started....can you blame me after my last episode concerning RAM?? Prolly not eh...well everything went very smoothly. After all..it should, it's only RAM for gawds sake, but I know that my last board was defective to begin with, starting right with the RAM sockets themselves. The sockets on this board were ultra easy to get the clips to snap into place, whereas the last board took considerable force to get the modules into the sockets.

I was certain that I'd have to remove that 8800 GTS card because the clips were almost right against it, probably only 1/8 of an inch away, but I was able to work it in without removing it and a small flat blade screwdriver helped to close those ones up without removing the card, so that was good news. I still have to take it all apart again anyways, when the new CPU cooler and my custom cables and sleeving arrive. The cooler requires a new backplate on the MB (of course), so everything's gotta come out again soon...more opportunity for things to go wrong eh..;) I'm very careful and gentle when doing this stuff but it seems I have the worst luck sometimes, but I don't expect any issues.

My replacement case window came yesterday too (some scratches on the original) but they didn't just send the plexiglass window...they sent me an entire new door!! So I put the new door on the right side and in a stroke of genius, I put the other door on the other side of the case...I now have a double door-sided case with windows on both sides! Looks cool and I may do a little lighting thingy on that side now too (later) or do a custom applique on the back of the MoBo tray. Lordy...I think I've turned into a case modder...once you get started tho, it's hard to stop and it's not really all that expensive either.

I went with chrome cable sleeving since the case front is chrome and the window side has chrome accents. The IDE and floppy cables are round, clear PVC with a silver (chrome I guess) mesh sleeving and I'm doing a spiral wrap with red EL wire on those. The SataII cables are translucent blue and I'm grouping the 3 of them together and doing a red EL spiral wrap on those too. They'll be like a cable harness where the ends just come out where needed to hook up and the rest continue on to the next device, I think that'll clean it up and look cool.

All the PSU cabling will be chrome sleeved with blue shrink wrap at the ends, so all the cabling has a chrome theme to it, with the interface cables having red EL wire spirals on them.

I'll have to get some pictures posted when it's all done, I think it's gonna be a knock-down, kick A$$ lookin case!! Too bad I'm about the only one who ever sees it tho...(LOL)

Pete - Hey bud! No, my lil sister lives a half block away in my old house! I don't have any family in Arizona, but In Colorado and New Mexico I have some cousins-n-stuff.

I believe they were bad sockets and a defective board now, they're both Asus boards and not a generic brand so the quality is there, but every now and then you can get a weak spot or two in a board like that. Usually you'd never know about them because you either don't mess around with things or it's in a spot where it'll never get any pressure put on it, but it just happened to be in a bad spot this time. I talked with an Asus tech and he said you could find weak spots in almost any board made, but it's rare that it'll break like that. Mine cracked right near a standoff/screw hole so that was probably why it broke. Plus the socket was awfully tight too...never had one that tight before, so it was just the right combination of things in the wrong place for me.

I'll email Marsh today, I haven't spoke to him for awhile. You too man...we haven't talked in some time either, and I haven't heard from Preston for Ages! The old crew has kinda gone off in different directions these days I guess. Not like the ol days when we ran TTV like a team...gawd, those were good days!

  7. I know I did an "All Inclusive" birthday post awhile back, but I just HAVE to post into this one!

    HAPPY B-DAY HITEST!!!

You've reached the big "FIVE-O", welcome to the club!

That means you're old enough to remember an old rhyme...."Georgy-Pordgy, Puddin pie....Kiss da girls and make em Cry"

What the heck does that mean anyway??? Geez there were allot of idiotic rhymes when we were kids eh..;)

  8. Ummm....inserting code at that hour???

    ;)

    That'll teach you.....remember the old addage.."If it ain't broke......"

(I should learn the rest of that saying someday)

The young-un's are playing with code now eh, leaving us older admin's to keep the place sane. Isn't it funny how one incorrect little snippet of code can make EVERYTHING go wonker-diddles? You probably sent it into a loopback that it couldn't get out of and normal traffic couldn't get authorized because all the cycles were used up in the loop right?

    ;)

Well, glad it's all sorted out 4 now, that is..until your Next "play around with server code" escapades, right guys!! ME?? I'll stick to playing with Hardware, it doesn't fight back....(as much)

  9. Glad to hear it's Benign Mark! That's good news my friend but I'm sure you're still in some discomfort with what's happened, so stick it out and it'll get better!

Like Barb say's, we have computer parts kickin around in the Garage Sale that you can pick up cheap & even free.

In fact, I now have a ton of parts kickin around but most are fairly new (as in a couple months) and I need to get some $$ out of them to help offset the costs of my new build as much as possible. I also have a good friend who I promised he could have the pick of the litter of my older parts, so there's probably not much left to pass on your way...sorry. I'm pretty sure he's taking the MoBo, P4 1.8GHz CPU and 756MB DDR PC3200 RAM from me, or otherwise I just may have been able to put together an almost complete computer for you as a temporary (or permanent) solution for now.

  10. Hey RV!!

Actually I had a chance to go to the game but was a bit under the weather that day and I decided that the heat would not do me very good, so I watched it at home.

Were you guys in town for the game?? (and you didn't call if you were...:(..)

Once I found that deal on the monitor on Ebay, I went looking around at some other stuff and I just couldn't pass on what I found, so I figured "To Heck with it"!! If I'm gonna replace a MoBo, I'm gonna rebuild the entire rig even tho it's only 5 months old! It's "close" to what I would've built so with a few upgrades I now have a decent custom rig, and it's gonna get even better soon ;)

I'm gonna lose some money overall but the deals I found beat anything I could get here and I'll have a few good parts I can sell to help offset things. Plus I should get at least 4 more builds out of this case, so as tech advances I'll just do it part by part from now on as needed. I should get at least 6 years outof this stuff as is now, so in the long run it'll pay off.

  11. Good Job Buddy!

Yes...a Virtual Storefront is Exactly what you need too!

I now do most of my shopping online and a good website will bring in some much needed business, maybe you can start selling parts online. There are many Cable, Case, and other parts makers who are looking for more retail resellers for their products and the parts business is a huge aspect of computers today since most folks do allot of their own building too.

I know I've run across a number of manufacturers this last few weeks as I've been searching for my parts, that use resellers exclusively and are looking for more. (Mad Dog Multimedia Cables for one, Thermaltake for another).

Something else, have a look at NZXT Cases for display and sales. They're fast becoming one of the premier cases in the modding scene. Most all reviews rate them among the top 5 cases made ad the prices are great, maybe you could be their dealer for your area?? Depends on how much you want to expand outwards, but I think an online shop with good parts and shipping will really help bring business in the door too, plus $$ into the account.

LOL...I remember when you started all this...you were going to charge $20 or so to rid folks of malware with HJT or sumthing along those lines...look at you now!!

I told you that I had seen soooo many others say they were going to make money that way before and never heard from them about it again, and I was a bit skeptical when you started saying that. I'll be the first one to say that I was WRONG this time, and I'll Gladly eat Crow!!! I'm VERY Proud of what you've accomplished my frend, and I hope you can make this thing take off big time!! You deserve it after all the hard work you've put into this. WTG!!!

  12. I know how you all feel...I too am a big time softie when it comes to animals, and Bobby...don't fret being 6'2" and breaking down when you've lost a beloved pet. I'm 6'2" of blubbering jello when I lose a furry family member, and even when my sister's lose one of theirs. (we're all big animal lovers in my family)

I have a male cat, Midnight right now who's also been diagnosed a diabetic. He's 12 now and for the last week he hasn't eaten hardly anything. Then a couple days ago I noticed his breath is highly "Acetone" which is a sign of uncontrolled diabetes. Stupid me was a bit lax recently on keeping up with his shots and I'm praying that his kidneys are not damaged because of my stoopidity.

I know I'd be devastated if he goes..he's been my constant companion for 12 years. I live in an apartment building so all he has is a balcony to go out on. He used to be an outdoor cat so this must've been hard for him but you'd never know it. Two years ago I moved into another apartment down the hall and this one has a window that open out to the roof (flat) so now he patrols the rooftop!! He loves this, it's big, and the manager likes it to as he scares off all the pidgeons now..;).

He poops out there but the manager doesn't mind as long as he chases pidgeons, so he has a job recently...except he tried to drag one into the apartment the other week. All I heard was a horrendous flapping of wings...a big cloud of feathers...and the pidgeon came loose as he jumped back into the apartment, and took off in a hurry!! My kitty has no teeth left so he couldn't hold it well enough...LOL!!

He does bring in the occassional Bat tho..I like Bats, so I let them go.

Anyway, enough about my buddy. Go get yourself a new baby from the animal shelter and save a poor little life!!! I'm sure they'll have a very happy life with you, you big softie!! ;)

My Condolences in your loss Joe.

  13. Thx Folks! (and fellow Hoser!!) ;)

Actually JSKY, my new RAM has yet to arrive so I still have that to do. There'll be a bit of apprehension for sure as I push that in..I'll be relieved when the clips snap into place before the MoBo snaps out of place! Even tho they say you shouldn't, I think I'll Help the clips snap in this time, just to be sure. Also, the new MB has more standoffs around the RAM modules so it should be stiffer and more support this time.

Family is sure growing up there TK! Congrats old friend!!

I just ordered a Zalman 9700 CPU cooler also and I'm going to make some custom SATAII, IDE and Floppy cables. I'm going to take some round clear PVC copper (or maybe silver) mesh IDE and Floppy cables and wrap a Red EL Wire (ElectroLuminescent) in a spiral around them, so the case will have a Blue & Red theme. Then I'll take some SATAII cables (maybe green UV or clear also) and also wrap a red spiral around them. I think that would look cool.

I've been toying with the idea of changing all the PSU connectors into UV reactive ones and doing a UV sleeving around all the PSU cable runs to really clean things up in there. I can cut the PSU cables to custom lengths if I really wanted to go overboard, but I'm a bit apprehensive about that one. I don't want to cut all the cable runs down and then in a few years, change some things and find my PSU cables don't fit with anything anymore...EEKKK! I'll do a sleeving and shrinkwrap on them still just to clean it up more, but I'm not sure how I'll hide the unused cable runs yet. I should've gone modular..in fact I thought I did but after I ordered this PSU I realized it Wasn't the modular one...oh well.

I tell ya tho...the more I look at my new case, the more I LOVE IT! It's just a gorgeous case and I'll recommend an NZXT Case to Anyone! Great cases and if you have ANY problem, a simple email gets you a new part at NO charge! Most places make you pay the shipping for replacement parts...not NZXT, they pay for everything and it's really easy to get a new part. My window came with a few scratches in it, and one email later I have a new one on it's way!!

That's Customer Service the way it SHOULD be!

  14. YO!

    Where you Bin man??

When I go MIA, it's only for a month or so...not YEARS!!

Welcome back, Glad to have you here again (isn't it nice to have a homecoming like this?? Can't find this at most other forums eh)

  15. LOL!!

I remember back when I was married, the ole lady got up in the middle of the night for a potty break, and as she was walking past the dresser she caught her little toe in the corner of it....gawd did she howl!

But then she just went potty and back to bed. The next morning when we got up she looked at her foot and her little toe was at a Right Angle to the rest of her foot!! Literally, it was llll_ sideways...owww. Went to the ER and of course it was broken AND Dislocated...never was the same again after that even tho they set it and wrapped it up, she lost the feeling in it.

I hope yours gets better soon Hitest! Just don't do your Lui Passaglia imitation anymore...(insider Canuck joke)

  16. I use a Logitech Cordless Optical Trackman myself and have for years.

I don't really sit "in front" of a desk since I have my LCD screens on articulating arms, so I have a reclining leather chair and my monitors floating out in front of me, so this doesn't suite a mouse well. I've used the Trackman on the arm of the chair for 4 years now and I LOVE this thing! It's by far the Best trackball I've ever used or seen, and the programmable buttons make life a snap!

  17. Hi Folks

Sorry I've been offline for awhile, I had a little MoBo issue.....Darn thing BROKE!!

Yep...broke, split...as in Cracked! Was reseating some RAM after doing a little cable management and hadn't even pushed hard enough to make the end clips snap into place, and the damn board cracked around the memory socket base......ppphhhzzzzatttTTTTT!!! blink....poof...off went the monitor and not to be on again until yesterday.

Well, I wasn't gonna put up with that so off to my lil sisters place to use her machine and get ahold of HP. No prob, they'll ship a new one but I had a little "special" request, I wanted an Upgrade. I'm now rebuilding my computer to what I wanted in the first place, so this HP is fast becoming a "custom box" and after next Monday, it won't even be an HP anymore, and I'll have some HP parts for sale on Ebay. Speaking of Ebay..have I found some SMOKIN DEALS this last 2 weeks, and now my puter is big time custom and fast.

First tho, a little history of Why this has all come about, and then you see my new parts...;)

Well, I bought that BFG Nvidia 8800GTS OC 320MB card from RubberDucky, for $300, it goes for $469 plus Tax up here so I saved about $200. But then I had to ask myself just What can I do that can put this card to work, other than some movies and some video/photo editing, but that's barely making the card breathe hard..so I had to think what I could do to make the card kick a$$ like it's built to. I'm not a gamer, but....Flight Sim!! Yah, I'm a real pilot and I LOVE aircraft, so MS Flight Sim X here I come!

K, I get FSX SP1 but it sucks using a keyboard to try and fly a 737 or an F-14 Tomcat, so I need a joystick. I looked around town and determined that Saitek makes some of the best sticks around but they're pricey. So onto the WWW I go and some time later, I end up at Saitek's Yahoo store where I see a small word in one corner..."Refurbished Items" (ok...2 words).."Click". They say that 95% of returned items are not faulty, it was faulty installation instead, but these products are all Refurbished & tested to work 100%, and are they ever CHEAP! Their $217 best dual stick/throttle set with LCD display was $64, so I was going to get that when I saw something else...their top Racing Wheel and Pedal set, usually worth $160, for $35! Umm, so I ended up getting their top quality single joystick, Cyborg Evo Force with Force Feedback servo motor's normally $135 for $29, and the R440 Race Wheel and Pedals set for $39...Free Shipping! That's $295 worth of high quality accessories for $64...nice. Now I need a good Car Race game for Vista, not easy to find right now.

So anyway, somehow I end up on Ebay.ca for the first time ever and I stumble across a guy who has 30 of the exact same monitor I've been drooling over for 6 months now, the HP w2207 LCD with BrightView. They're worth almost $500 here and these are selling for around $300, brand new and full Warranty. They bought them for an HP sponsored software show, set up by professionals, never handled by the public, used 40 hrs...I joined and put in my first ever EBAY bid. The first one I lost by $5 but the guy writes me an email and offers me one for $285 CAD (my bid) plus $26 shipping....uhhh ..OK! I now have the best 22" LCD made and if you don't believe me, go to a store and look at all the 22"rs together and tell me the HP w2207 doesn't blow the others out of the water. You can't because it does, there is THAT much of a difference...it's Incredible!!

So on we go. I like Ebay now, so I'm surfing around for a few hours and I come across some RAM. Not just any RAM either, Crucial Ballistix Tracer, 2G kits (2x1G)...for $89 a kit. 3 kits left and it's the fastest my "New" board can take. I do some checking and it's about HALF of what I can get it here for...so I buy 2 sets of 2G's for $210 CAD shipped. Saved me $185 from the best I could find here. Well, this new RAM has blue LED's around the base and a special circuit on the bus that runs colored LED's along the spine of the stick, that shows what the memory is doing, (read/write/etc)....and I'm gonna put that into a closed HP box?? No way...off to find a new Case I go. Long story short...I end up buying an NZXT Lexa Classic case, shipped for $145 CAD. I read 13 reviews on this case and every single one rated it among the top 3 cases they ever tested, and probably the most Beautiful case they ever tested...I agree completely. Usually goes for $235 CAD, I saved $90 by searching around.

So..This is my new box..(and toys) Chappy's been a "Busy Boy"

NZXT Lexa Classic Case - Reg $245 - Paid $145 shipped (have a look at the review link, great pictures on the next pages)

    4G's Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2 PC2 6400 - Reg over $400 CAD - paid $210 shipped

    BFG Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS OC 320MB - Reg $500 (about) - paid $300

HP w2207 22" LCD Monitor - Reg $493 - paid $327 CAD shipped (now running 2 LCD monitors, 22" HP and 20" Acer)

Another Ergotronic Neo Flex Articulating LCD Monitor arm - Reg $127 (in Canada) - $75 shipped

Enermax Noise Taker II 600W PSU (bought to run Video Card) Reg $160 - paid $135 shipped

Saitek Cyborg Evo Force Joystick - Reg $135 - paid $29

Saitek R440 Wheel (Force Feedback) and Pedals - Reg $160 - paid $35

New Asus P5LP-LE socket LG775 MB with Intel 965 chipset - $00 (replacement upgrade from HP)

That's $2220 worth of stuff for $1256...not bad, not bad at all! Saved around $1000 and hopefully I can sell about $400 worth of my other stuff.

These are the things moving into the new case from the HP:

Hauppage HVR 1600 Phantom Dual HD output TV card

    RealTek 8.1 digital audio

    830GB's HDD (3 x 250G SATA @ 7200RPM, 1 x 80G ATA @ 5400RPM)

    HP 802.11b/g Wireless Network Adapter

    Intel® PRO/100 VE Network Connection

2 DVD Burners, 1 with LightScribe

    Floppy Drive

I'll be taking all the other good parts out of this HP, like the memory card/stick readers and some front audio & s-video ports and assorted other stuff, and modding it all into the new Lexa case too. I have to decide on some UV cable sleeving but I can't decide if I should use Red UV sleeving to offset all the Blue I have, or Green UV sleeving? What do you guy's think? I'm leaning to Red & Blue myself, I think that would look cool.

Now all I need is to upgrade from the Intel Core 2 Duo E6400, to either the E6700, or E6820, but they're sure selling cheap on Ebay right now. I also have allot of HP stuff I'm going to sell now too, to try and offset some of the costs, but man...did I ever SAVE a bundle by shopping around and just being at the right place at the right time...for once. Some of these deals were 1 time only things, so I got lucky on some of this. My new case arrives tomorrow so I'll be offline for awhile while I build that...I can't wait, I'll have to post some pix after it's all done, including my new visual screen area of around 42 inches.... I like that! I can have multiple things on either screen now, but it's a Loooooong way to mover the cursor from the bottom left corner of the HP monitor all the way to the top right corner of the Acer, but I don't mind ;)

    I AM SO STOKED!!!!!!!!!!!!

    UPDATE -

The case arrived last Friday and I built on Saturday night. Fired it up first time Sunday morning and all is Perfect! It's even better looking in real life than any picture I've seen and the temperature monitors are working properly. It has CPU, HDD and System temp monitors, and some folks have had difficulty getting them placed properly and reading properly but I guess I did things well cause mine is working great! CPU is at 30C in this case, HDD's at 26C, and my System temp is actually on my chipset heatsink and hovers around 40C (which is fine).

I will have to get some pictures for sure soon and post them here and in theMod section, it's gorgeous but I have to clean off the desk and find a spot front & center for it now. It's too good looking to be stuck under the desk now...LOL!!

  18. Throwing my "Welcome Hat" into the ring as well!!

    Hiya Wizz, and Wecome aboard!

Relax and enjoy your time with us, invite some friends and tell them to bring a few brew's to the mix so they can bribe us Admin's with (if they're old enough that is..). Never hurts to suck up to the Big Boys on the block eh..;)

  19. Stick with Vista, you'll get used to it and it'll work out. It's only going to get better as it ages...remember how "Pathetic" XP was out of the gate?? XP never ally took pff until after SP1 and Vista will do the same, it's just some drivers that are a PITA for Vista right now really, I don't know why it's taking some places so long to get solid drivers made for Vista but that's the main issue right now.

It's just the learning curve that's got you ticked with Vista probably, it happened to us all, but the more I use Vista now the more I HATE Like it...

  20. Isn't it amazing how people are so into their cars!

I've had some doozies in my day, as I'm sure many of you have had, and also some real dogs too, but I'll never forget my favorites.

1969 Mustang Mach I, 428 Super CJ that pulled wheelies in stock config...

1974 Datsun (Nissan) 240Z, and my 76 280Z...both awesome fast & solid lil cars.

    Both of my 68 2 door Beaumont's (one red/white, one blue/white)

My 66 Pearl White Chevelle 2 door, with an 895 HP 427 (race block & heads), dual 750cfm Hollies...oooooo, this one was soooo fast, 7.86 in the 1/4 @ 188 mph..in 1976 - 3 gallons to the mile...;)

If only I could have those ones back again

  21. No prob Marty, good luck with your new stuff! We're always here to help you out bud.

I'll bet your new graphics card has improved system performance for gaming and video editing.

Just a tiny little bit is all hitest...if you consider going from a 64 VW bug to a 2007 Ferrari as a "Little" thing!!

Gawd! This card is probably..no IS the 3rd highest rated card in the market, and really is tied for second because #2 is the same 8800 GTS card with 640MB memory instead of 320MB that this one has.

Even with that, it's performance is exactly the same as the 640MB card has so there is no diff really, and this is Overclocked by BFG, so only the 8800 GTX is better than this card, and the 8800 GTX is the best card made today, hands down!

I couldn't fit a GTX ayway, so this is absolutely the TOP card I could possibly get today...I'm peeing myself here!! I saved well over $100, which I promptly put into the new PSU of course, and HP may still be sending me an 8800 GTS card too, so if/when they do I'll just sell it. I may completely break even on this... or I may hav this new card and PSU for about $30 or so total outlay, and I have a friend who's interested in my older 450W PSU so I may even make money on all this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Me is a happy person right now, and HP has as much as admitted the design flaw for graphics on this machine. They did not rule out my proposal for a fix between us ($100 for an 8800 GTS and I won't hurl this thing thru their front window to return it), and i'm dealing with an HP CEO at the moment. Let's say I made a few waves over there lately, but I can prove my point beyond any doubt so I think they have to make good with me.

  22. AHhhh....Thats Nothing!!

    This one time.....at band camp...(heheh-heh)

A few years back I was about 85 miles out of Lethbridge Alberta on my way home in my 95 GMC SLT, when EVERYTHING just up an died on me!

Nothing, no electronics, no spark, no nothing and I was in the dark and all alone. I was able to hitch a ride back to Lethbridge and had the truck towed in the next day. Turns out there was a flaw in the onboard computer that caused it to short out against the casing, and it was a factory workmanship flaw so they paid my towing bill and had a new computer shipped in and installed the next day.

I had to call into work and take a day off, but I was glad that it didn't cost me anything and that I wasn't further out, or have it happen at 3am when there's little traffic on that highway.

I don't know if all this electronic stuff is better or not really. It just adds more things to break down and is impossible for the average joe to fix without specialty tools and diagnostics. Give me a 74 Chevy with a 327 and I can rebuild it in a day, but these new vehicles....ferget it!

  23. TT

Yah, the air tools are all fine an all, but a little too much for the confined spaces in the case..;)

I did think about renting a jackhammer for a little while there...

    Marty

The case does't matter for that, it's the MoBo support for P3 to P4 that matters. The MoBo should easily fit almost any case you want as most cases have insert holes for most every MoBo configuration imaginable. They're designed with certain specs to make sure almost any MoBo will fit in almost any case. As long as you're not trying to cram a full ATX board into a mini-ATX box, you'll be fine.

It's also not all that hard to do this stuff either, you just have to be methodical and not afraid to do some inventive re-arranging sometimes.

  24. LOL Liz!!

Yah, it's a bit "Techie" but it makes perfect sense to me..;)

Of course it does...I did the work and wrote the post so it better make sense to me at least..

    Thx Joe!!

    Pete

I drilled out the holes with a real neat angle drill (Recharge battery Op'd), which can swivel to different angles to fit into tight spaces. It doesn't spin really fast, which makes it useless for any tough materials, but it's perfect for this type of stuff.

Plus, being a Journeyman Sheet Metal Worker before I became a Firefighter, I'm pretty handy with modding the insides of these things and I have every metal working hand tool I need. If I still had access to a shop, I could completely redesign and rebuild all the support structures and drive bay boxes an stuff, but it'd be easier to just buy a new case that suites the needs.

This is definately as far as this case can go now. I couldn't add or modify another item without having to go to a new case altogether, but this is also the last things I should need too. This 8800 GTS card and the Enermax PSU will be able to suite my needs for a long time to come so they'll probably migrate into my next machine for sure and maybe even the machine after that too. That all depends on how fast Tech advances past todays stuff of course, but I can't see these items being too outdated for at least 6 to 8 years. (for my needs anyway)

That card is a monster!! ...if it was the GTX model tho, it wouldn't fit period! The GTX is about 3/4" longer and I just couldn't get that in without completely removing a very important support strut. ;)

Yah JDoors, that's EXACTLY what it's like!
